de-chroming a FI air filter housing

I have a 62 original F.I. air filter housing that is chrome plated. Anyone have any methods for removing the plating without disturbing the original metal. Or to paint it, was suggested to use a self etching primer, followed by top coat, another suggestion, to have it powder coated. The plating is in good condition no flaking or chipping, just a little tarnished in some areas. What is the best way to tackle this?

Most chrome plating shops can remove the chrome.

Bead blasting it prior to painting works also. Bob

Bill, I have powder coated some engine parts on my auto X'r but on an original housing like your's I would strip and finish as factory.

          Good luck with it!

            Bill,

You ought to try muriatic acid (pool acid) on it. I use muriatic with a 3 to 1 cut for removing zinc or cadmium from steel parts. It stops bubbling once it gets down to the steel.

I undersand that it will also remove chrome, but maybe at a higher concentration. Worth a try, but do it outside as the fumes from the bubbles are toxic.
