Re: 1960 Oil Filter Cannister Bolt

    All,

I agree with Joe that the reason headmarks are often left out of the Judging Guide is because there are just so many bolt marks that occurred. I have seen judges take off points when a bolt marking was not in the JG even though the listing in the JG was just some examples and not meant to be an inclusive list. Most judges give credit unless the headmark is clearly not a period mark, such as the triangles seen on a lot of hardware store bolts that have, unfortunately, made their way into a lot of restored cars.

As for replacing bolts, my rule is to NEVER replace a bolt unless you know for certain that the headmark is wrong. In fact, don't replace anything that you reasonably believe is original to your car no matter what the "experts" say!

Re: 1960 Oil Filter Cannister Bolt

I am calling Ken Hansen this morning and requesting that he restore my cannister unit as received.

I can not prove that it is the original unit, but now one else can either. I believe it is the original and based on the responses to my original question, a bolt without a maker's mark is not only possible, but probable.

The Technical Discussion Board once again proves to be a priceless source of info. Thanks to all.

I have an original PF-131 canister (56-57) and there is no headmark. I also have a PF-141 on my car. I don't have any idea what year this canister is, but there is no headmark on this one either. -Dan-

Thank you Dan. I would say that there is strong evidence that bolt heads with no maker's mark were prevalent for several years of C1s. Like everything else that required fasteners, if one box was empty, the assembly worker dipped into the closest open box and used the part. I instructed the cannister restorer this afternoon to use my bolt.
