    C2 oil leak need help

Trying to get my 67 327 300hp car ready for the 420 mile drive to Reno for Hot August Nights. Previous post and solutions have fixed my over heating problem after the Vintage Air install. This morning I replaced both gaskets at the fuel pump as I have had a leak in that area. I now have more oil leaking then before and I do not believe it is from the gaskets. The short bolt is in the front with thread sealer and looks good. Is there a possibility that the fuel pump itself is leaking. Except for blow back, the only oil I see is all over the fuel pump. Car is on the lift and I can see no oil coming down from the valve cover (gaskets on valve covers changed recently) Now I am stuck on a tight schedule as I leave Thursday morning. Might have to take the 57v wagon instead! Thanks for the help.

    John,

Oil leaks can be very difficult to find as you are experencing, clean oil is tough to trace. Did you seal the small 1/4" bolts holding the plate to the block on the fuel pump, I don't know if these are through holes or not. If you have oil over the fuel pump there is a oil seal in the lid but I can't recall ever seeing one leak.

Look closely at the valve cover gaskets because with the steel valve covers the corners are not pressed tight because of flex. Usually when the covers leak it's in the rear corners of the block and it runs down to make it look like a pan gasket leak.

They are not through holes; they are blind-tapped.

John, I've had oil seep out of the weep hole on top of the fuel pump, was leaking internally. Changed pump, nice and dry.

It could be your timing cover gasket or crank slinging oil on the pump when running. Look for any oil sitting on the bottom of the timing cover area.

Could be a front timing cover crank seal.....

John, as Dan says I myself have seen the pump diafram fail and oil will leak out the breather hole in the fuel pump, the best way to approach this is to wipe the area down and start engine and take a spin around the block and then take a look at the weep hole again.

                Dan & Edward,
Where is the weep hole at on the top. I have been looking fairly closely and have not seen it. thanks,

John, the weep hole is on the aluminum part of the pump I believe there is a small dia hole on both sides of the pump closet to the pump bolts.

If the pump is old, I'd replace it as a general maintenance item. That way, you'll eliminate the chance of it going out on you when it's least convenient AND you'll eliminate it as the source for your oil problem. These pumps do not cost very much.

Just to add to Joe's comment, you'll also eliminate the chance of mixing gas with your oil. Ask me how I know.....

I also agree with Joe and Frank, probably best to replace the pump and do so on your schedule, rather than a forced situation. If the diaphragm develops a rupture it can create an oil leak thru the vent weep hole in the top of the pump, and a more severe event is allowing gasoline to mix with the engine oil and could fill up the crankcase.
