    '65 396 Side Emblems, Chapter 2

Back in mid-Oct 2008, James West initiated a thread on above subject, mainly dealing with the color of red in the left flag. Extended to many posts, morphing into subject of nose flags as well. [orange-red looks terrible on Rally Red body]

I'd like to get comments on this single fender L78 emblem that I just got off eBay; the price was reasonable, and I bid based on curiosity. Never been installed, no box, and it exhibits shelf wear.

Big pic below shows a service GM ? emblem (top) that's been on my car since at least early '80s (last time previous owners painted the car). Sorry for the large file size, but easier to compare details. Below that, I show four thumbnails of specific features.

First and second thumbs show the backsides. We're all familiar with GM service that has the casting #s (= also catalog #s) for both the '65 and '66 (427 versions). The mystery emblem I just bought has only the '65 part #. Notice the "CMD" cast to the right of the number; this may be the clue as to the source supplier (or repop shop ?).

Third and fourth thumbnails show two views of the (lengthwise) brushed chrome on the Turbo-Jet face, and the thickness of the side bevel (about 1/16" more than the service unit, resulting in a heavier casting, almost 1/2 oz. more). In thumbs 1 and 2 you can see the difference in the backside "tray" depth. The service shows the typical General Detroit marking.

So what do I have ? Figure I'll mount it on a plaque .

Thought CMD was custom Custom Mold Dynamics before they became Trim Parts. Bob

CMD = Custom Mold Dynamics and now known as Trim Parts in Ohio.

What you have there are two GM issued emblems for a 396 issued in or around the 70's.
If you have them judged you will loose points. The judges have only seen Trim Parts emblems and that's what they think is original.

I'm sending you via PM a shot of the GM Parts Box and lable for the 3872997 date code on parts lable is FK4 - so my guess in 1974 - but that is just a guess

Also photo of the back side of an assembly line part removed from a totaled car in the early '70's with the only marking being a small "B" large "S" small "C" on the right side BSC - tried to take close up photo - need to practice some - Also need to figure out how to post phots to threads

Thanks, Carl -- my email is "last396@telus.net" . Are you saying that yours has no cast-in part # on the back ? Can you do another shot of the front (does your camera have a macro setting for close-ups ?)

I see in my GM master price list of Jan 1980 that # 3872997 is still alive.

What would really be great is if somebody has an original owner, never restored L78 (untouched, except for removing the side flags ) to report with close-up pics of both sides.

                Wayne,

I'm not sure but I don't think any original 396 emblems had both the 65 and 66 part numbers on the back. The original 396 emblem would have been designed long before the 66 427 was on paper.
My guess is that later service 396 emblems would have had both numbers?

                  Wayne,

Correct NO part numbers cast on back of either emblem - left or right

Additional pictures sent to you yesterday.
