I originally joined in 1988 or around that time and didn't keep up my membership . I can't get my old number back .

A revenue generation idea would be for the NCRS to sell off some of the lapsed 3 digit and 4 digit numbers. It would be sort of like buying a continuation car.

I really like my assigned number, easy to remember for me. I associate 22 with the M22 Muncie and 375 with the 65 FI engines HP.

I joined in Dec '87 and was assigned 12139, after selling my first set of Corvettes I let my membership lapse for 8 years, re-joined and received my original membership number again.

In one case I am aware of the original number can not be identified. If you don't have any old mailings with your old membership number on it you have to rely on the membership office. Their computer program (and way back it wasn't even on a computer) has changed several times over the years. Some of those earlier computer programs do not run on modern computers, and the old computers are relegated to collectors. Thus the old electronic records do not exist. I believe the original paper records are gone as well.

I believe the electronic records only go back to about 1992 or so.

The field advisors in your sector have declared you "obsolete". (Any Twilight Zone fans here? )
