    Alternator Pulley and Fan---1970 300/350 with C-60

Someone asked about the correct pulley and fan for the above-referenced application. Attached are photos of the correct pulley and fan. Note the embossed "6" on the pulley. This represents the part number of GM #1949356.

I believe 1970 base engine without C-60 used a similar but slightly larger OD stamped steel pulley with an embossed "7" (for GM #1949357).

    Joe,

I have all 4 of the "single digit" pulleys (some NOS, some used) and they measure as follows:
    1949355, "5", 2 1/2" O.D.
    1949356, "6", 2 5/8" O.D.
    1949357, "7", 2 13/16" O.D.
    1949358, "8", 3" O.D.

Re: Alternator Pulley and Fan---1970 300/350 with C-60

      Joe,

According to Chevrolet Parts History GM # 1949356 was replaced with GM # 1949355 in November 1967. This change was for service parts BUT the 1949356 alt. pulley was apparently still used on the assembly line as shown in the 1969 Corvette AIM. Also, GM # 1949357 was replaced with GM # 1949355 in November 1966.

The 1969 Corvette AIM (UPC C60, sheet C1) lists the following:
      1949356 alt. pulley
      1966990 alt. fan
      3876846 W/P pulley
      3911013 C/S pulley
fan belt --- Production part (which would be the 1st track fan belt, GM # 3959166, as shown on UPC 6, sheet A4).
On sheet A2 in UPC 6 in the revision record alternator 1100833, alt. pulley 1949357, and alt. fan 1966990 were "REMOVED" on 8-16-68.

According to my 1972 Corvette Parts Catalog (Sept. 1971) the following are listed for the 1970 Corvette 350 engine w/AC:
      1949355 alt. pulley
800594 alt. fan (replaced 1966990 in Jan. 1971)
      3876846 W/P pulley
      3911013 C/S pulley
      fan belt 3861946 (3/8"-54") --- base engine and 350 H./Per. w/AC

The 1949355 alt. pulley was used on 1963 Corvettes w/AC as per the 1963 Corvette AIM. My 1969 Chevrolet Parts Catalog also lists GM 1949355 as the alternator pulley for the 1969 Corvette 350 w/AC which conflicts with the 1969 Corvette AIM (UPC C60).

Researching the correct pulley for a 1970 Corvette 350 eng. w/AC has been and still is a bit confusing but I agree with you that the assembly line pulley was probably GM # 1949356 (stamped "6").

I also agree with you that the 1949357 alt. pulley (stamped "7") was probably original equipment on 1970 as well as 1969 Corvettes w/base engine without AC.

Yes, the 1949356 and 1949357 were discontinued from SERVICE in 1967 and 1966, respectively, and replaced by the 1949355. However, as you surmise, the 1949356 and 1949357 continued to be used in PRODUCTION well after the time they were no longer available in SERVICE. This is a somewhat common "phenomenon". For PRODUCTION, GM vehicle line engineers consider that very specific parts need to be used. But, for SERVICE, GMSPO decides that several part numbers can be "consolidated" into one to reduce inventory part number proliferation. No one will ever notice the difference in performance or functionality when an original 1949356 or 1949357 is replaced with a 1949355.

I can say, for certain, that the 1969 300/350 without C-60 originally used the 1949357 since that's what was originally supplied with my original owner 1969 Corvette. Photos of that very pulley are attached.

The 1949355, 1949356, and 1949357 were used in PRODUCTION for many Corvette applications. I can't find any information that the 1949358 was ever used for a Corvette application.

Re: Alternator Pulley and Fan---1970 300/350 with C-60

          Joe,

Enclosed is a couple of photos of two almost identical alternator fans, both GM # 1966990, I believe.
The fan of the left in each photo does not have any stampings but the fan on the right has the number "8161" plus a 1 5/16" long arrow pointing in a counterclockwise direction. The only physical difference is the shape of the notch in the 0.68" diameter holes. I assume that the fans were either made by different companies or at different times.

The fan on the left side is identical to another fan that I have that was removed from a 1100566 37 Amp alternator dated 1E17 (May 17, 1971) purchased in 1974 from a junk yard in Hudson, NH, with a # "6" pulley (GM # 1949356) as a replacement for my 1970 Camaro SS350 shortly after I returned from a 12,000 miles 2-month cross country trip. The actual pulley in the photos (left side) had a # "7" pulley (GM # 1949357).

I bought the "8161" fan about 20 years ago along with a bunch of other GM alternator fans, pulleys, and fan-pulleys from a place in Merrimack, NH, that rebuilt alternators and starters.

Do you know anything about the "8161" fan?
