    Need Brake Help

Here is the situation - 52 year old brakes on my 1959 - felt it was time to rebuild. Replaced all brake lines and hoses with new, had master & wheel cylinders board and sleeved, turned and resurfaced drums, pressure filled with silicone brake fluid and adjusted shoes. Result - no leaks, good firm peddle and stopping action is good EXCEPT they pull hard to the left. After 130 miles of soft gentle driving to seat new shoes to drums, I pulled the drums and inspected, found no leaks, primary (smaller) shoes in front position, and drum and shoe surfaces look OK to me. I then re-adjusted all four brakes and re-bled right front wheel position to no improvement. I am out of ideas and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Adjust both front drums snug and then back off 7 clicks. I think that is what the AIM says.

With front end off the ground spin right front tire and have someone press on pedal to make sure brakes are working.just because the wheel clyinder was rebuilt is no sign it is working.

Paul, if everything's adjusted, there's only four things that can be wrong, all on the RF. First, the wheel cylinder seals (also called cups or caps) could be allowing fluid past them and the pistons are not working properly. I know that you had them sleeved (not my favorite thing to do). There also could be some trash in the line, probably at the wheel cylinder, providing enough blockage to allow only a small amount of fluid past. You could have a leak at at the fitting, although this is not very likely. But one of the most likely causes of your symptom is the collapsing of the flexible line when you hit the pedal. Did you replace these lines?

Thanks for the input guys - tried each suggestion to no avail. In frustration I put the car thru several hard brake stops, and low and behold, car no longer pulls to the left. Now working great. Beats me. Something must have shifted or seated. Guess a little anger every now and then is a good thing. Thanks again for the input.

You posted the same time I did. My guess is the wheel cylinder piston cups had not sealed. You'll need to watch this after your car sits, to make sure that that there is not a deformity in them and that they will continue to seal.

I had an issue where the mechanic turning the drums was taking off too much metal in a pass and caused a chatter. Man did that pull. I would also expect it to seat and smooth out over time.

                  Paul,
I think I have an explanation.

I knew a car salesman that said if you open the hood and cuss the situation out and then just stare at it, it can fix things.

Dominic, it seemed to work for me this time.
