I recently had my 1959 T-10 rebuilt by a reputable driveline source but I am perplexed by the speedometer gear. The gear is light red, .800" diameter on the edges and .780" in the middle, 21 teeth, and the gear is .400" thick. The bullet is new and fits well. When I engage the cable into the square on the gear it is a good fit and the cable will not turn when the transmission is idle so that's ok. When I engage the transmission with wheels spinning I can feel the speedometer end of the cable sporadically trying to turn but mostly i can just spin it with my fingers. As soon as I stop the transmission, the cable can't be turned unless i pull it out of the gear from the speedometer end. I've tried 2 cables . Any ideas? Could i have the wrong gear or bullet?

There may be a DRIVE gear installed which is not compatible with the 21 tooth red DRIVEN gear. You can confirm this by installing a 22 tooth GREEN DRIVEN gear. If it then works OK, you know that you have a DRIVE gear installed which is compatible with 22 tooth (GREEN) thru 25 tooth DRIVEN gears. Of course, a 22-25 tooth DRIVEN gear might not produce acceptable speedometer calibration for your rear ratio and tires.
If the above proves to be correct, the only solutions are to change the DRIVE gear OR install a 22-25 tooth DRIVEN gear and use a speedometer adapter to correct the output speed. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
