    Midyear glue

Got counted off at Bloomington, on a 67, for the wrong color of weatherstrip glue. I know it is yellow and from what I have seen on survivors it is yellowish brown, but I figured that was age. Anyone found any new yellowish-brown glue to use? 14 Top Flights and 11 Bloomington Golds and this is the first time I have ever been counted off for this.

    Thanks

Jeremy, I believe the glue when originally installed was clear. The yellow/brown came with age.

    Let's see what others say.

As I have posted before, use contact cement. Available at Lowe's, HD, Ace, etc

Jeremy, I used a stuff that the company Wurth makes, weatherstrip adhesive, great stuff and brushs on and looks like that factory, that has a light brownish color, the yellow stuff that 3M makes is good stuff but sticks out like a sore thumb.

              Hi Rick -

Yes, I believe John Hinckley also indicated during his seminar last week at Novi that the glue was clear when initially applied. So, given that, what is the best way to prepare a car for Flight Judging?

No, the glue used for vinyl flooring, laminate counter tops, etc. Has a very light tan tint to it.

The stuff Dick is referring to is amber and will be a perfect match, you ahve to be fast as the solvent bites into the paint. It essentially is the same stuff they used back then.

If John is correct which I will assume that he is, why do judges demand seeing yellowed glue on restored cars? I understand wanting to see yellowed glue on a bowtie car but for a freshly restored car, it doesn't make sense but then again, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer

                        Steve,
You are not the dull knife either.

If the factory worker was instructed to be SLOPY with his or her work that's one thing.

But history teaches us not to repeat mistakes, SOOOOOO if you see yellow on my door it was because I couldn't do it right either?

Imagine what the vette would look like with every reproduced mistake.

I have respect for the way others are doing the hobby but I am doing every thing myself on my vette and it will be a reflection of MY work, not BUBBA's.

They don't necessarily want to see yellowed glue, they just do not want to see the bright yellow "gorilla snot" glue.

                            Dick,

I assume you are using something like that weldwood contact cement available at the HD..

Bingo! I could not think of the name Tim. Too sorry and lazy to walk out in the shop and look at the can. Guarontee the weatherstrip not to come loose if you follow the instructions on the can. Might pull the door off the car, but the weatherstrip will not turn loose!
