    1971-1972 starter

Which is correct for a September 1971 built 350/200 automatic---1108427 or 1108430? If either which is easier to find?

    Thanks,

Delco-Remy says GM #1108430 was originally used. The 1108427 was primarily used for passenger cars with 2 barrel carburetors. However, I suppose it's possible that some 1971 Corvettes might have alternately received the 1108427. Either starter would have functioned OK for the application.

Anyone? I tried the archives and only got more confused. References to 1108427 and 1108338 and 1108430 and one can be used for both 4-speed and automatics.

I have a Aug 71 built base motor 4sp car. I'm think it has the 430. I'll try to check it tomorrow.

          All------

So what's the difference between an 1108427 and an 1108430? The 1108427 is a standard torque starter and the 1108430 is a high torque starter. Both use the aluminum, 2 long bolt nose and will fit 1971 Corvettes with THM-400.

Thanks, Joe. When I see the term 'will fit' it makes me squirm as that is what I see on eBay a lot. That doesn't mean it is correct for that particular application. The JG states that either could be used. What is recommended for the 350/200? High torque?

I can tell you my May 71 build 350/270 auto has the 430 starter.

Scott, my 72 L48 auto. has a 430 starter and I don't recall ever seeing a 427 starter before. there may have been a shortage or something somewhere along in production.

Thanks, Ed. The JG states that both were used in both 1971 and 1972 for 350 automatics. I am leaning toward the 1108430. Now to find one that is dated before September 1971.

In this case, my use of the term "will fit" means that GM could have installed either starter on a 1971 Corvette. Both starters were also available at that time.

For 1968-70, GM generally used standard torque starters on base engines. For 1971 this began to change and, it could be that both type starters were used. So, I expect that's why both the 1108427 and 1108430 are shown. I expect that some original cars have been found with the 1108427, but I also expect that such installations are in the minority. Still, if you showed up with one, according to the JG it would be deemed acceptable.

Thanks to all for your comments and assistance. I may have actually found a 1108430 today that is dated April 1971. I would prefer a closer date to September 1971 but beggers can't be choosers.
