    Re-dating a Holley 3124 ?

There's an eBay seller offering a restored '65 396 L78 LIST 3124 carburetor which originally "had a 1966 date code", now changed to 573 "using the same tooling as Holley to do this"; supposedly to make it more valuable.

Can DB members please elucidate me on the process.

And if you're going to re-date, why choose the 3rd week of July, 1965, when probably the last of the "IF" coded blocks had already been assembled (complete with carb) by July 15, give or take a day ?

Wayne, the only process that I am familiar with is that they use a roller, under considerable pressure, to move the metal around and close up the old dates. They then take a tool holder and restamp the numbers in the clean surface. The first ones that I saw done, you could feel inside the air horn and detect their work. Since they started doing all the work on a mandrel, it is not detectable. Since I have not restored a Corvette for judging in quite a few years I can admit that we had quite a few carbs redated. Never had one caught at NCRS or BG. Before I quit judging, I would always run my fingers inside the air horn to see if I could feel evidence of the rework.
