    Yes, another ammeter fluctuation thread

Please accept my apologies for what will prove to be a little redundant. I have searched that archives and believe I have some direction.

67 Coupe. All new harnesses. Original voltage regulator. Symptoms...............wild fluctuation while running. Ammeter responds to loads. When not running, ammeter responds to loads but not nearly as wild. The capacitor is there and connected properly.

Does this sound like a unit that has lost it's "viscous" fluid? I'd rather not buy a gauge for simple diagnotics while the expense of a gauge is not a concern.

    In advance, thanks!

    Tim,

Expense, no problem! Just order you a new one cause the old one has cashed in it's fluid along with the magnetic dampening.

The story continues........... I have purchased an N.O.S. unit (looks used to me) and the needle is not centered in the gauge. Assuming the unit would straighten out upon a load being applied, it is now pegged at 40+ and unresponsive.

      thoughts anyone?

Have you checked the readings coming right out of the alternator?

Joe meant a new repo, not a 40 yr old used part.
