Side Pipes removal

I am awaiting the look and sound of my 65 327/300hp 4 speed Coupe as the stock exhaust is being put back on as it came from the factory as I plan on having the car judged.

Just wondering what it will sound like....some say I will here the radio again. I hope I will like the sound.

Does it actually allow the car to perform any better and or bring out the 300hp?

Dean,
I took the sidepipes off my 65 365 HP Convertible about 5 years ago, and I love it.
I can hear the motor run and it sounds great. The exhaust I put on came from Volunteer in Tenesee and fit pretty well. I wish it was just a little bit louder at idle, but it sounds good when you open it up.
Perform better, this may start a controversy, but I actually do think it makes more power now than with the side exhaust.

Congratulations on your decision to have your car judged! I believe such a decision requires a great deal of dedication and commitment!

Now for the counterpoint on the question of side pipes vs. under car exhaust:

I had a '67 Roadster, (with hardtop), L-79 327/350 hp, 4 speed, 3.70:1 posi, with previous owner installed sidepipes. I loved the sound; and the L-79 engine with the 3:70 gears seemed to be very quick. When I traded the car on my current Corvette, I learned that my nine year old daughter did not like the sidepipes--they were too loud in her estimation.

The car I now have is a '66 Coupe, L-79 327/350 hp, M-20 (wide ratio) 4 speed, 3.55:1 posi, and factory stock under car exhaust. In my opinion, it is too quiet; and I feel like I am driving some old geezer's '66 small block station wagon. Additionally, I have had six (6) C-2's, five of which were roadsters with hardtops. The '66 Coupe appears to be the slowest of all of them, possibly because it is quieter than the roadsters--even those roadsters equipped with under car exhausts. God I hate this current car!!! Of course, please take what I have said with a grain of salt, as I always replaced the factory exhausts on my Harleys' with Screamin' Eagle baloney cut performance mufflers.

Have just taken a renewed interest in my 1967 300/327 I ordered new, sold and repurchased 16 years ago. My story's in the summer 2000 Restorer. I didn't order the side pipes but a previous female owner installed them in 1970. Having the frame repaired or replaced this fall and am thinking about putting the exhaust back to original but like the sound and looks of the factory side pipes. Not sure what I'll decide.

For what it is worth. My friend has a '65 coupe 327/300 bone stock factory under car exhaust. I have a '65 coupe 372/365 side pipe. The difference is night and day. That is both the motor and exhaust. I can barely hear his car running, and can hear the radio. I can only hear my motor. In my opinion the 327/300 is meant to be a civilized street car. I think you will be surprised how quiet it is. I do not think it will perform any better. Back then the easiest way to free horsepower was to uncork the exhaust.

Dean, there was some discussion not too long ago that mentioned the potential power losses with sidepipes, but I don't remember if it was just for BBs. You may want to check the archives.

I agree, a car like the 300HP was never intended to have side exhaust, kinda like putting cutouts on a '32 Ford flathead, it's still a flathead and will never be an L71

After the side pipes come off and go back to original under car system I am thinking of adding the new Vintage Air. I understand that the point deduction will not be too bad as in the side pipes for judging.

If you don't like the thought of having a cork in the exhaust (IE-Sidepipes) try for a set of the undercar "off road" exhaust systems. The mufflers have fewer internal restrictions than the standard setup, and MUCH less restriction than sidepipes. There are many discussions on the performance limitations of sidepipes in the archives.

At 66 years old I'm definately adding Vintage Air after my frame is repaired. OK, that was part of the deal with my wife. My grandkids can put the car back to original after I'm gone.

I think the point deduction for adding Vintage Air is only 40 points? Is that right? Side pipes is around a big 130 pts in total?
