Re: Trailing arm spindle bearing end play

Thanks Gary: I am starting the reassembly of the trailing arm tonight, so it'll be a day or few before I get to the spindle for real. I am starting on the parking brake and spindle support back on the trailing arm first. I have the trailing arm off the car (along with EVERYTHING else!) I tend to do some of these things slowly and more than once. Once I get the spindle and reassembled in the trailing arm, I'll use the log nuts to hold the rotor on and do a run-out check that way. I'll look at the service manual to see that process. The article in the RESTORER was very informative and the timing (for me) was excellent (Thanks Mike and the Springers!) Regards...joe

I finally completed this and lo and behold RATS! ROTOR RUN-OUT!! over 1/8 of an inch and I could actually watch the pads pump the caliper pistons in and out (this was still on the bench). I got into the archives looking for advice. The best information I could find was to dress up the interface between the hub and rotor. On close inspection, there didn't seem to be all that much rust, but I cleaned it up anyway, certainly expecting the worst: no change. HOLY COW :IT WORKED!! This forum is great! thanks to all!

.125" runout is a lot, something must have been burred or raised. Glad you got it corrected.

It looked bad enough on the bench to make me believe it would have been noticeable on the car. My point here is that the parts didn't LOOK bad enough to cause that kind of run-out, so checking is important...Thanks Gary...
