    67 radio speaker with a/c

I just removed the dash from my 67 roadster with a/c. The speaker has a couple of numbers on it. I am hoping that someone can decipher them for me and confirm that this is the correct speaker for my car which if it is I will have it restored. Also, I would appreciate recommendations for a reliable source to restore the speaker.
    The numbers are:
7282256 and directly below that 466717.
    Thanks
    Neal

I can't help with deciphering your numbers.

I recently bought speakers for my 70 Coupe from here. Very pleased.

The speaker I have is from a 63 with these numbers 7282256 and 466640. Recently had it rebuilt by Jackson Speaker Service at 1 517 789-6400 in Jackson, MI. Recommended by several NCRS members and he did a top notch job at a reasonable price.

        Joe,
        Fo whatever its worth, I was told this morning by Ron McGee of Jackson Speaker Service that the last 3 digits of your 466640 number indicate the following;
        6(the year 1966)
        40(40th week)
Ron did not indicate what the 466 stood for.
If Ron is correct then your speaker would seem to be several years newer than the production date of your car. Likewise my speaker with a 466717 number would be about 6 months newer than the production date of my 67 car which was September of 1966. Not sure it matters much since I don't think anyone can see these numbers once the speaker is installed, especially in an air car like mine. Maybe there is someone out there that has more direct delco knowledge about the meaning of these numbers.

Re: 67 radio speaker with a/c

My 1966 Corvette restoration notes indicate that my original speaker had "7282156" stamped on it. Back in the 1980's I bought a GM replacement speaker, GM # 7282256, and had to transfer the original transformer to the new speaker. Somewhere in a box in my garage attic I still have my original "7282156" speaker. The stamped number "7282156" agrees with the part number in the 1966 Corvette assembly manual (UPC U69, sheet A3). When my garage attic cools down to a reasonable temperature I will try to find my original speaker to see what the date code is. I assume my "7282156" speaker was original but I will not know until I find it and check the date code.

This speaker is for a C2 with A/C. It has a lower profile than the standard speaker. I couldn't make out the part number. It isn't called out in the AIM as a special speaker for A/C.

My 1963 Chevrolet Radio Parts Catalog (Oct. 1, 1962) shows part # 7282156 for the 63 Corvette speaker.

                My 1967 & 1968 Chevrolet Radio Parts Catalogs (Oct. 1966 & July 1968) lists speaker # 7282256 for 1963-1967 Corvettes (327 & 427). I do not have a date when GM # 7282156 was replaced with GM # 7282256.

I can not find 728250? (or any number close to the Ebay speaker) listed in my 3 radio parts catalogs.
There is nothing in my 3 radio catalogs about the 63-67 Corvettes w/AC speakers.

It's seems like the 7282256 speaker is the "low profile" type. There is currently a NOS 7282256 speaker on Ebay (see link below).

                  David,
The 1967 AIM UPC U69 page A2 calls out the same part number as the one you listed---7282156. When I spoke to Ron McGee earlier today and mentioned that my 1967 had ac he gave me the 7282256 number as being the correct number for my application. I cannot find a different speaker in the ac UPC U60 section of the AIM. David, what is puzzling is if the 7282256 speaker is a later replacement, then the date codes mentioned earlier don't make sense?
David does your car have ac?

The speaker in the ebay ad looks exactly like mine.

                      Neal,

My 1966 Corvette does not have AC.

                        Neal,

Does the 466717 (1967, 17th week) date code on your 7282256 check out with when you 1967 was made?

The list price for the 7282256 speaker in Oct. 1966 was $8.40.
There is no listing for 7282156 speaker in Oct. 1966.

Look at your speaker profile to see if it matches that in the EBay photos. My non A/C 67 has speaker #7282156 and the profile is higher.
The speaker # in the EBay photo appears to be 728250(?)

Attached is a photo of my #7282156 non A/C high profile speaker as well as the A/C low profile speaker.

Thanks for the code break. Agree with others that the 7282256 is service only, and shows as such in the Chevrolet radio service and shop manuals, starting with the '63 Wonderbar, through '67. Also believe they came without the choke coil, which had to be transferred from the original. Typical factory production used the ....156, as shows in the AIM's. IMHO, there was no special shallow speaker for air cars, with the magnet turned right angle from the long dimension of the 6" x 9" speaker.

My early '65 air coupe has a ...156 with code 4664xx (last 2 figures are almost obliterated). I've owned for 31 years and believe it to be original; the cone protector fabric is rotting to the touch.

To all who are considering a ...256 shallow speaker, "special for C60 cars" spend your $$$ as you wish.

Here's a few pics of eBay units I've collected over tha past decade; first is '63 Wonderbar car (242 date); 2nd is '63 AM/FM (309 date); third not identified but probably early '66 (528 date), now that we know the date code system, which seems to match seller claims.

Here's another speaker part # link; C2's speakers are discussed down a bit

Here are photos of two of my 7282126 speakers.

The speaker on the left (without the transformer) is the original speaker from my 1966 Corvette wo/AC (made in Feb. 1966) stamped "7282156" and "466505" (1965, 5th week). The speaker was made about one year before my car was made.

The speaker on the right (with the transformer) is one I bought at Corvette Carlisle back in the late 1980's and is stamped "7282156" and "466706" (1967, 6th week).

The height of each speaker measures about 3".

The speaker now in my car is NOS, GM # 7282256, was purchased a few days after March 25, 1980.
