    1972 small block temps

I have a 72 350/200hp. The temp. gauge runs a steady 230/235 and when I shoot the block and other areas around the engine compartment with my Lazer- I get 184/196. I know the manual says, under operating conditions, gauge should read 235. Is this normal or should I get a new gauge? Thanks, Carl

The normal operating temperature range for your engine is 195-230F, however it should only reach the high end in hot weather, low speed traffic.

Many replacement temperature sensors give high readings on the gage. The Wells TU-5 is supposedly most accurate.

FWIW, my '72 (350/200) no AC, 4 speed typically operates in the 180* - 190* range. On very hot days when in traffic, it climbs to just in excess of 200*. Once I start moving it comes right down to the typical temp range.

I've checked/confirmed the gauge to be reading + approx 5* with a pyrometer.

        I hope this helps you.
