Repairing 1970 window crank and exterior handle release

I'm preparing to remove the interior panel on my 1970 Coupe. The window crank slips and is unable to raise or lower the window.
Additionally, I have great difficulty in opening the driver's door from the exterior.

Realizing that these are 2 different projects, but both need worked on when the panel is removed, I'm requesting suggestions, tips to improve my success.

I have basic mechanical skills, so will be learning as I am going. Thanks in advance for your help

Chris, the door panel is the first step, once removed you'll be able to see the linkage for the door latch behind one of the inspection plates, it maybe just some linkage that requires some lube. as for the window- It may be a stripped crank handle if you lucky, other wise there maybe a window regulator problem, also when you incounter a window that cranks up and down with to much force there is a aluminun housing on the outside of the window crank attached by 3 bolts, just remove,it may need some grease to free up.

Thanks for your reply. Is there a specific type of lube that you use with success?
Additionally, the lock knob near the arm rest appears attached with a metal pressure clip. Is it as it appears, or is there a trick to removing it.

      Thanks again,

Chris, the clip that retains the lock knob, is like the window crank clip, the last time I removed mine I used a pocket screw driver, sometimes depending on how many times they have been removed ,just a little pull and they will come off clip in all. As for the lube try a little WD 40 to get everything working freely the use some spray white gease after.( put a old rag on the bottom of door to absorb the stuff that may drip onto the interior of door bare fiber glass may absorb any oil or grease. then when finished do a clean up ).

The rear-most nut on the exterior door handle is a BEAR to get out.

It's easier if you drop (not remove) the latch assembly by removing the 3 or so screws in the door jamb.

A 1/4" socket set with a flex driver will be your friend.

Chuck you made me think about the outside handle, The rod the is attached to the outside handle is adjustable. So Chris if your having to push the handle to the bottom of the recess to get door to release you can adjust the rod to latch, But will require as chuck says drop the latch down to adjust.( a small space to work).

              Hello,
I am also in process of removing the door panel on my '69 to trying to get the window to move freely.
Tool j-7797 is referenced in the overhaul manual for removal of the crank clip. Where is this tool available?

Thanks for any help you can give. I don't remember ever posting to this board before. I top flited my unrestored '69 at the NCRS national meet in Lake Placid back in the '90's but have not done much with it since then. Its a small block so it doesn't really seem to garner much interest at the NCRS gatherings but it is a great driver. I had it stuffed away in the garage but recently took it back out, checked everything, changed the oil and took it for a good long run. The only thing that has failed is the passenger window. The car had been broken into back in the 70's and the junk-yard replacement window is the wrong date for my June car so it costs points but the story why is known. I wish they had properly adjusted it when they did the glass replacement!

Tom most of the local auto parts still carry the window crank clip remover tool. its generally a only a few bucks, the tool was used forever in the 60,70,80s.

                  Here's a pic.

There are several designs. I have at least 3 of them. Some are fatter, some are thinner, etc.

The clips are called "Omega" clips, as they resemble the Greek letter, Omega.

Make sure you insert the tool in the proper direction.

Also when reinstalling the Omega clip make sure you install it with the open end toward the handle of the window crank. Install the clip with the handle off the car and then just push the handle straight on. That is why the window regulator shaft has a taper to the end -- so it will expand the Omega clip when the window crank is being installed.

How do I know about the direction of the clip? I had a driver car that Bubba (many Bubbas I think) had worked on and I couldn't get the window crank off. I struggled for hours. I finally pushed that tool in backwards and it came right out. Bubba had installed the clip backwards and I had no way of knowing.
