Exh Manifold Washers and Shielding Brackets

Hi, Do you still use Exh Manifold washers when you install your shielding brackets and if so which goes on first the washer or the brackets? I am asking specifically about 65 small block. Thanks, Mike

    Yes. Washer on first.

Nope. Bracket first, then the washer. These are from my 65 SB car. The manifolds have never been touched.

Thanks Jim. If you are right and I suspect you are, I guess I will need to change mine.

          Russ -

The French lock always goes next to the bolt head, and the special washer always goes against the manifold; the bracket goes between them.

The '65 AIM agrees with your verbal description (UPC U69, sheets A7 & 8).

The '65 TIM&JG also says the same, but the problem arises for the ~90% of the small blocks that have radios; the guide does not address where the shield support bracket locates ie: (quote from pg. 111):

"A steel washer (spacer, not split washer) is used between the French lock and the manifold".

Makes it sound as though the spacer and lock are in order. No mention of bracket.
            I don't know if the '66 TIM&JG describes differently.

I wouldn't say ALWAYS. The above pictures show how mine left the factory, with the bracket against the manifold.

The 64 AIM, secU69 sheet8.00 & 9.00 show the washer then shield support then bolt. (Oh, pay no attention to 8.00 that shows washers on the inner manifold bolts) Remember it was the factory floor at GM!

The 65 AIM shows the same however, I doubt that is how it was done in reality. My car is a 50K mile, 1 owner car that has never been touched. Oh, I don't have washers on my center two bolts either. I find it odd that some make a post and then disappear without backing it up, like we're supposed to take their word as the gospel.

Jim, If you haven't all ready you should get these pictures and info to either the team leader or a manual revision team.I am assuming but double checking that you are that one and only owner from new?

Maybe it's just the way the pictures were taken but the lock straps almost look like the 66 and later style that was required for the new manifold. The bottom appears more rounded instead of the somewhat flat design of 65 and earlier.

No Russ, I bought it from the original owner and have a complete history including every piece of paperwork generated for this car from the day it was ordered to the receipts for oil changes, the new battery, tires and shocks (the only parts that were EVER replaced) installed at Sears. I've contacted the team leader regarding a few items that disagree with the Judging Guide. NO RESPONSE. The funny thing is that after I post something that disagrees with the JG (for example, the vacuum advance unit) I get PM's from those that have the exact same item but they too have never gotten any response when they contacted the "experts" regarding a correction to the JG.
I know my car is original and whether that agrees with the JG or someone who thinks they know better, I really don't care. I'm just stating how mine left the factory. Mine still has perfect examples of the original frame stencil, chalk marks and inspection paint dabs but I'm sure there's someone out there that will say they too are incorrect.

                              Jim,

I noticed what looks like black paint on the dipstick tube as I read they were natural steel.
