Ah yes, the good old days of Engineers with narrow ties and tie clips. I was in the Army then, thinking about placing my order based on the advance publicity. The guys with the narrow ties were like those I worked with at White Sands, but perhaps in pursuit of a little more power in the Johnston Island Nuclear tests (Operation Dominic). I tech wrote and Illustrated one of the final "Fire Ball" reports that killed the Nike Zeus about that time. It was hard to concentrate in that vault as I dreamed of my new 63. Who knows? maybe I screwed up and the world avoided war!

Yes, I did notice that. Interesting. I thought all the rear suspension/drive components were shinny natural finish? Maybe that was a special car?

Can anyone read the vin nimber on photo 114B? It looks like 0004. I am interested in that the early 'TANKER' cars were used by racers at Riverside in October 62 and later Daytona in Feb 63.

These are photos of the PILOT LINE, not regular factory assembly line. Use of these as a guide will only add more wrong material to the JG.

Excellent point, unrestored, bowtie, road tests on original cars, can produce some great insight to the original building of these cars. And will also show they were all slightly different.

                        Loren,

That's correct. There are a lot of items/processes shown on the first 25 pilot cars that would not be the same as regular production cars. (However, the chassis black coating on the rear suspension/drive in the pilot pictures would not be much different than regular production)

How about the completely unpainted clutch housing on the engine? (I think I know why)

any pictures of pilot line cars with the 2-bar knock-offs? assume some of them were delivered with them?

Rick, Gulf Research was only 25 miles from my house. The Grady Davis Gulf Research car (one of many) was a 63 tanker that came thru with wheel covers. It was a very early 63. I know that well as I got the wheel covers from that car. Also got numerous other early take off parts such as a wobble pump for the fuel injection, the glove box door (different grain to the fiberglass)and as mentioned the wheel covers.
Rich Mason had the car. I don't remember the serial number but think it was in the 2000 range. By the way it was white with blue interior.
