    58-62 Turn Signal Flasher

Posting this for a friend. I have no 58-62 reference material to help him out.

    Refer to the picture.

The picture shows a Signal Stat ZN 232 flasher. The "information" appears to be etched on the cover, not raised or embossed.

Is this the correct flasher for a 58-62?

Or, should it be a Signal Stat 142?

Is the Signal Stat rectangular flasher original or optional equipment during the 58-62 era, OR should the car have a round Tung Sol type flasher?

If the Signal Stat is original equipment, should it be silver/aluminum color or are colored Signal Stat flashers OK?

Any input will be appreciated. TIA.

    Chuck

    Chuck,
I believe 58-60 is different from 61-61 because of the extra tail lights.
The ZN232 is correct for a 58-60,not the 61-62. Bob

Good point, RJ. I didn't consider of the extra taillights in 61-62.

Sounds like 58-60 might be one style, whereas 61-62 might be another. Makes sense.

I'm just passin' on the info I was given.

I have no idea what is correct, and I don't have a horse in this race.

      Thanks for your input.

Again the good old assembly manual comes to the rescue. The flashers spec'd for the '62 in the assy manual are Part number 3758682, with the 683 listed as optional. The '682 is carried in old parts books as a 3 bulb AP373V. The optional part number is not in the three books I checked.

My 1963 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1962) lists GM # 3713382 for 55-60 Corvettes & other Chev. models and is described as "FLASHER (2 bulb)(ZN232)".

GM # 3713382 is also listed in my 1957 Chev. parts catalog for "55-57 ALL, CORV. (exc. D-D).

Well, the good old Tung Sol AP373V is the same flasher that is used in the 63 Corvette too.

I guess that the parts book gives no description of the 683, the "optional" flasher. One would assume that it might be a Signal Stat brand.

Do you have any knowledge of the configuration of the "FLASHER (2 bulb) (ZN232) ?

The one I pictured in my first post MIGHT be correct. My friend had never seen a Signal Stat flasher with an etched cover. All the ones he had seen (and me too) have the embossed cover.

Chuck - Many of the Signal-Stat ZN flashers I have seen have the etched logo on the top of the cover but I have also seen some ZN332s with the logos embossed on the top of the cover. One of these embossed cover ZN322s (stamped S2562) I have is in a black and yellow GM box w/ p/n 3758682 and in an identical GM box with the same part number is a SIGNAL-STAT 143 (stamped S2543). Old parts and old cars are fun. Pete

                Thanks again to all.

                I'm curious.

What do the 58-60 and 61-62 NCRS JG's say about the flashers?

"All 1958-60 models use a silver rectangular "ZN-232" flasher installed in the fuse block."

So, Bill, the manual makes no mention of any "optional" or "alternate" flashers?

Nope. That sentence covers all mention of '58-'60 flashers, Chuck. Maybe '61-'62 will expand the options.

I believe 61-62 use a "ZN 332" or a 142. The only flasher that I know is correct for 58-60 would be "ZN 232"

My '59 has a 142, so probably not.

Yes, I think the 142 replaced the ZN232 under the new number system.Bob

I want to thank my friend Chuck for posting this for me originally, and those who have replied with info about this question. Just joined the NCRS (this is my first post) and look forward to exchanging info about these great cars. I've owned this 59 for over 30 Years now and I guess being down to the flasher is a good thing after all this time. The restoration journey sure has been fun though! Pilot Dan
