Refinishing Steel Wheels

I have 5 originaal wheels for my '64. All of them need to be refinished. My stock hubcaps will be mounted on them. My debate is whether to have them painted or powdercoated. Do others have experience installing hubcaps on powdercoated vs painted wheels. Is powdercoating more resistant to being scratched by the hubcaps? Is it worth the ifference in cost to have them powdercoated?

Doug, if the 64 caps are like a 63, go with the paint. The 63 caps when installed scratch right down to the bare steel.

Doug,

I had the wheels on my '64 powder coated. Paint them and save the money. Mine scratched to the metal the very first time the hubcaps were installed and every subsequent time.

I even had mine painted with a special so called hardened paint many years ago (Imron??) and was told they would hold up - NOT! The caps scratched down to the steel. Best bet = get lots of good matching touch up paint to go along with the repaint, which in itself should be quick and dirt cheap.
