    59 chassis hardware

could anyone give me a few pointers as to what finish a lot of the chassis hardware is? what is cad plated, zinc plated, black phosphorus, whats painted, etc. such as trans mount, any brackets and corresponding hardware on the frame for E brake cables or brakes likes to name a few.

im halfway sure the front cross member and rear radius rod hardware are cad as well as the leaf spring shackle nuts and washers and front bracket bolts, some other particulars would be front and rear shock hardware, sway bar, driveshaft u bolts, anything in the front suspension area, and so much more.

also some interior and under dash hardware i still need to figure out as well, cowl vent bracket, steering column brackets, seat mounting hardware, etc.

i'm working on a future Duntov award car, so i need to be as accurate as humanly possible, ive heard a lot of stuff was zinc or bare, but would like to confirm as much as possible.

im using a fouth edition judgin guide, and the 58-60 restoration handbook, an AIM, and there is a lot of stuff covered in these books but not many of the particulars that im looking for and i don't feel comfortable guessing at all.

is there any other literature that would help my cause? has anybody found a good reliable effective way to find the proper finish and color/plating of not just hardware, but parts in general?

Have you got a copy of the Judging Sheets? You could at least determine what is judged and what is not. Someone with more knowledge than me will chime in I'm sure.

There are several historical posts regarding this subject. Perform a search through the Archives and you should find several references. It may take a few tries to get the correct search phrase. Good Luck.

John, the archives will let you see the where the questions lie concerning what's correct and where there are contradictions. However, they will also point to literature and people that can help. Sometimes there are a lot of threads and many of them won't answer your questions, so it takes some time.

With respect to your post, I've found that you get a more thorough discussion on this board if you can break your questions down and just ask about one thing at a time. I hope you can see that providing the correct finishes for the entire chassis, including drivetrain, suspension, under dash, etc. is quite an undertaking. Lots of parts.

thanks for your advice paul, you have a good point. i just don't know where to start, and im kind of hoping all over the place. and to make things even more difficult i have found some things out that contradict the judging manual, for example the front sway bar is left unfinished, rather than semi gloss black according to a couple corvette guys i know. im sure finding the right person to help can be even more valuable than finding the right post.

John, I wrote some articles for the Restorer back in 90/91 about chassis/engine detailing, look them up. My 58 sway bar was raw when installed but got a shot of chassis paint after installation. Same with the rear springs, suspension etc. The 53 to 72 chassis book is helpful. Best idea is to look at bowtie cars and takes notes. There is no easy source for all your questions. Happy hunting!
