How do you test that the ECS system is funtioning properly?

I remember a recent (last couple of months) thread on rebuilding the carbon canister (don't restrict your search to 1972 or even 1971 and 1972) that included instructions on how to test the system.

      Terry,

Being new the posting threads---how do I search for the rebuilding/testing the canister?

      Thanks,
      Les

        Les,

At the upper right, on the blue bar is the word "SEARCH," left click on it. The box that comes up has the words "Advanced Search" at the bottom -- left click on those words. A larger box will come up. At the upper left area of that box is a box below the words "Key Word(s):"
Enter the words carbon canister into that box and left click on the button near the bottom "Search Now"

One of the threads that comes up will be:

This was the second thread on my search, immediately following this thread -- but YMMV.

          Terry,

Thanks for the help. What a great thread for the rebuild. If I have to do the same to my '72 LT-1 it will be very useful. I will first have to do the vacum test to see if unit is working properly. I may need to contact Craig to see how he found that his canister was not functioining.

Down toward the bottom (on post 19) is the testing instructions, but those are for bench testing. I would think the same test can be done on the car. One just needs to figure out what connections to make while the canister is in the car. That shouldn't be too hard to do if one had the vacuum diagram and Craig's instructions in hand. It would certainly be an advantage to test the canister before removing it.

              Terry,

I will do the test as Graig did but on the car before removing the canister. Since the hose goes to the PCV valve I should start there and then from the PCV valve to the carb. I will look into it next week. I just aquired the car back in Dec. and now getting into some of the problems. I feel there is too heavy a gas smell and it may be from the canister.I'm having the carb rebuilt this week and will see if that may be the problem, but I will still check the canister for the proper function. Thanks for your help.

I like your mulsanne blue--I had the same yr in that color---nice. Now the '72 is in bryar blue with A/C, and a survivor car---I'm blessed.

              Thanks again for your help.

Sweet. Bryar Blue is great color, especially in original paint. I have a soft spot for original early C3s.
