    C3 Steering Wheel bends

My 69's steering wheel started flexing at the top. I've been told this can happen due to an accident but I believe it's more likely due to years and years of the wheel being used as a push point to exit the car. In any case, can this be fixed? If not, anyone found any repro's that are acceptable. All I have seen are imported and don't appear to have same grain on the rubber.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jack

Are you talking about a separation of the rubber from the stainless steel wheel frame? I've never seen this but I suppose it could happen. I don't really see how an accident could influence that, though.

No. If you push, even lightly, against the top of the wheel it will bend at the two upper spokes. Appearance wise it still looks excellent. Seems like there must be an inner steel reenforcement that's broke at those points. I've been told that they are designed that way to give during an accident.

The core that the rubber is molded on is probably cracked and more likely broken where the spokes are welded to this mild steel core.I have seen this on wheels that I have removed the rubber in order to replace it with Teak. It was necessary to reinforce the area and have it welded again. If you need more info. call me at 519 752-0780 or email douglas.graves @sympatico.ca.
