65 Miscellaneous Repairs

I had my car judge at Bloomington Gold this year and as a result I thought I would fix some of the issues that were brought up. I have a 65 with the 365hp engine. Help on the matters below would be appreciated.

1. I am replacing the intake manifold bolts. Should the black phosphate bolts be painted silver or would they remain black?

2. How does the plastic strap for the positve cable to the battery attach to the battery tray and the cable?

3. Would anyone have a picture of the glue on the doors when the weatherstripping was installed?

4. Is there a special rivet tool to attach the front clip to the ignition shielding? Any other method to attach the small rivets?

Jim -

1. Judges like to see some aluminum paint on the bolts from the process where the exposed head surfaces were painted.

2. The battery cable is retained to the heat shield with a black "fold-over" plastic push-in retainer strap in the existing hole in the shield; see your Assembly Manual, UPC 12, sheet A7, item #20.

4. Those are semi-tubular steel rivets; to do the job properly, you'll need a rivet set tool with a raised "tit" in the center to roll the end of the rivet over on the flat washers.

Here's a picture that was posted a while back of an original 63. I don't believe it's necessary to be as sloppy as the factory was in the picture. But most judges like to see a little glue holding the W/S on. I use 3M yellow trim adhesive but I know there is other glue out there that some folks like better than the 3M stuff. I'm sure someone will chim in with tehe name of it.

Yes, that's something that many folks don't consider. The color of the adhesive changed significantly with aging. So, when folks use 3M Super Weatherstrip cement they think it's just not the right color. However, it is VERY close to the color of the adhesive when it was new. Of course, what folks should be after in restoration is the color when it was new, not the color seen now.

The same principle applies to other things that change with age (e.g. electroplating)

I just can't see taking a good weather strip job and slopping it up with glue.

I know that is what it takes for points, but to take a good job that should have been done at the factory in the first place and slopping up someones good work seems wrong.

I will loose points there because I don't want to explain why I was so sloppy to other people that look at my car.

Again don't beat me up, I said I was wrong. Thats just the way I feel about it.

We hear you, DOM, you're not the only one. You can also throw in orange peel in the paint and overspray on the bellhousing and manifolds. While I'm copying some of these things I'm also making sure that I can fix them after NCRS showing is over.

No one os saying that you have to "slopping it up" to get a Top Flight or a B/G. I have seen many Corvettes without over spray and without sloppy glue on weather strips get B/G and Top Flight. It's your car Restore it to the way you like.

This is true. I receive B/G without over spray in areas and without the sloppy glue. After going through the items I lost points on, I am going through them to see which ones make sense to fix.
