Re: Procedure to replace tach cable

I replaced my tach cable on my 74' with A/C last year when I had the dash pad out to replace the speakers. To get the dash pad out you need to remove the passenger side dash panel and the upper panel in the center stack and remove all of the screws holding the drivers side dash panel in place. It also helps to unbolt the steering column at the firewall and under the dash so you can slightly lower the column and move the drivers side dash panel aft. You also have to remove the interior trim pieces around the windshield and to disconnect the speakers. It sounds like a lot but all of that stuff comes out pretty quickly. You do have to slightly flex the dash pad to get it out but the flex on my car was minimal and it came right out. With the dash pad out and the drivers side panel pulled back slightly you can then access the back of the tack to release the cable. The cable goes through a grommet on the firewall so the grommet will need to be removed but can be reused during reassembly. I would say this is about a two hour task.

That is exactly how I did it last year. Takes a little time and care. The firewall grommet is generally toast but they are inexpensive.

You can do it, with help, without removing anything much. Remove the distributor end. Then have someone pull on it as you push the retainer clip down on the tach. You can do that with a long thin screwdriver or if you have small hands and arms. To install, guide it onto the shaft and give it a push to snap.

          Gentlemen,

It would be good to know if this Corvette owner has a 68 or a 69. Most if not all 68's have a screw on end at the tach head and distributor. Most if not all 69's have a slip spring lock at the tach head and a screw on at the distributor.

Thanks everybody This is a Sept. 68 built car. It has a screw type fitting on the distributor end. When I make the repair, I will post my findings on the tach. end.

October 25, '68 build date and both tach and speedo have push on connectors.
