    59 Trunk latch won't release

I have finally gotten to the point where I am installing the trunk latch and lock. My problem is: When the striker bar is adjusted so the gap between the lid and the body is correct (about an 1/8th - 1/4 inch) the latch will not release when the cam is turned. The only way to get it to release is to go through the emblem hole and pul the latch open with vice grips. When I raise the striker bar to where the latch will release, the gap is around 1/2 inch. I don't see any adjustment that can be made in the latch position.

Anyone have any ideas I can try? Sully

Is the trunk gasket new? Have you tried pushing the trunk lid down with your hand, it might help make the key turn easier with down pressure. I had to do that with my other 60 because the new gasket was not broken in. Hope that might help.

Yes the weatherstrip is new but this problem was happening before it was installed (no weatherstrip). There is no problem turning the release cam and I have tried pressing down on the lid to relieve pressure to no avail.

Bob, assuming that your lock mechanism is working correctly, it sounds like the lid could be binding up when latched. Have you tried very minor adjustments in the trunk lid hinge bolts? Very minor adjustments to the striker bar can make a big difference as well. I have seen some that need shimming to move them slightly forward as well the typical up and down. It doesn't sound like your latch.
