    What is my car worth?

I know that is the name of a TV show. I watch it along with many others that are available now. Does anyone know a fairly reliable appraisal source, hopefully online where we can get a faily close appraisel? I am going to insure my restored Corvette and would like to make sure I have the proper value coverage. Also I am considering Hagerty for the Insurance. Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Thanks,

NADA Classic Car Guide is about:
    Low:$36000 + $1200 both tops
    Avg:$51000 + $2000 " "
    High:$67000 + $2500 " "
Fuel Injection add 30% to above base.
This is a rough estimate based on the shape and originality of the car.
I watched What's My Car Worth last night and a 62 fuelie went for $70k.
My red 62 looks like this.

With Hagerty, it's worth what you want it to be worth. You pay based on the value, so if you insure it for more you pay more. They don't require anything in the way of documentation of value so just err on the high side.

        Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replys. John Your car is beautiful. Same with you Patrick although I do not know why you did not include a picture of the "deer modified" car. I tried NADA but could not get the C 1s to come up. I guess I will try again. My car has just 11 miles on it fron a complete 3 year frame off nut and bolt resto. It should pass a Duntov with a little fine tuning on "operations" I have leaned heavily on the Tech board thru all of this and will express my graitude once again for what was the best decision I everr made in joining the NCRS.

I insured my 63 with Hagerty for the cost of the car, all the restoration costs plus 10k. It was amazing how high that number got to be!

I insured my 70 Coupe with State Farm (I already have 2 vehicles and a house with them), you get additional discounts for another vehicle, you can set the value of the car (I set the value at $25K), and with antique plates it costs about $200 a year.

I called Hagerty, but they had some "use" restrictions that I didn't like.

I insure through Farmers, and they require a written appraisal and will cover whatever that says. I have used an online appraiser, usaautoappraisers.com. They do a pretty good job and the guy is a qualified appraiser, they have done 2 cars for me and Farmers is happy with the appraisals.

I've seen this "what's this car worth" thread come up many times on the CF. Does anybody know where the NADA gets its values for cars this old, generally private sales? I read many postings where people are skeptical of price ranges given by this publication, doubting its credibility.

One big item I've never seen is how a NOM affects the price. I assume the NADA guides assume the block has the correct numbers?

I've wondered if there is any credible publication which can be used for a guide.

I totally agree. NADA, Kelley, etc. are suspect since they never reveal their sources for these prices. Also, the spread is so wide from top to bottom it allows a wide range of "correct" values. If they are getting these values fom public auction sales, we all know how much time and place, as well as economic cycle position, effect them wildly. In the written appraisals I have gotten for insurance on my cars, the appraiser lists his sources, explains condition, collectability, etc. values and where the market is if many of his sources are old. But this is not quick and easy, and if the insurance company is not concerned about using these publication values and letting you name your price, no problem I guess, but I would not buy a car based on these publications as the sole guide.

Corvette Magazine also puts out values twice a year.

                        Hi Jack,
I recently switched to American Classic Car Insurance after doing my homework. They had the best coverage and the lowest premium. You don't need an appraisal since you set an agreed value for your car. They also give mileage options, provide national roadside assistance, cover lodging if repairs keep you from getting back home, and include coverage for spare parts. You can check them out on the Internet.

                        Good luck,
                        Roger (50141)

I use NADA a lot in buying and selling cars, but I've never used thier Classic Car values. I looked a couple of cars up yesterday and the values shown appear to be $10k-$15k over what I've recently seen at auctions and other known sales. Obviously, the market is down and NADA probably has not adjusted thier numbers to reflect this. I don't believe that NADA's classic car values are accurate right now, but they may be a good benchmark for setting an inflated value for an Agreed Value policy.

I have never found the NADA Classic book to be very accurate. The tend to be either very underpriced or very overpriced compared to current market

i have american collectors insurance. i have been very satisfied. you can chose a few different milage options. and the premiums are fair.
i have one problem with "whats my car worth". they always say how many were made but never consider how many are left that didnt rust out or get totaled. but i do watch the show and enjoy it.
