    C5 Tire Monitoring System

I have a 2004 which shows a "service tire monitoring system" message. The dealer tells me that I have a bad battery inside the tire sensor on the right front tire and that I need to replace the sensor. He further recommends that I replace all 4 sensors because of the batteries. Does anyone know how long these batteries inside the tire monitor sensors typically last?

    Thanks for your help.

No real set time for them. We are still seeing early C5's with sensors still operating as designed. If you do replace one, I would see no reason to replace the others if they are working OK.

I read somewhere, that they are supposed to have a 7-10 year lifespan.
I tried to find the article without success.

Terry, I do not remember where I read it, possibly the owners manual or shop manual, but the battery life was supposed to be 8 years. My 02 is going on 10 years old and no problem with the tire pressure sensors.

It's part of the valve stem, inside the tire.

                  Re: C5 Tire Monitoring System

I was told 7 to 10 years at Museum Delivery, but I had one fail this Spring. I don't think it was a bad battery though -- it just failed to communicate. I couldn't even get a bettery reading witht he tool.

Which brings up another point. There are tools that will interogate the sensor and give an indication of the battery level. One might be able to thus gauge the life remaining in each sensor. There are other tools that do not give this reading, so it might take some searching to find someone with the more sophisticated tool. Mine is a Kent Moore unit and IIRC I paid in the range of $200 to $300 for it.

                    Re: C5 Tire Monitoring System

I have had to replace only one on my wifes '98 - about a year ago -

Discount replaced it and reflashed the computer for $45.00

GM says that '97-'00 used one style and '01-'04 2nd design which is less expensive.

The Discount Tire store I use shows one style works on all C5's and are a bunch less $$$'s than local Chey store.

Lots of threads on this subject in the C5 section on the other "forum"

$45 X 4= $180 you can buy one hell of a tire gauge for that. now the all knowing federal govt says all new cars have to have these sensors.

And you can blame the many Ford Exploder owners who didn't check their tire pressure for all this.

they say that ford got firestone to lower the recommended pressure to be used in their tire because the vehicle rode too hard at the pressure that firestone originally recommended
