Welcome newbe, how did you get such a low number? As to the rear end, if memory serves me you jack up the back of the car, both tires off the ground, and manually turn the right rear tire, if the other tire doesn't move you have an open rear end. Next mark the bottom of the driveshaft, turn the tire one revolution and count the number of times the drive shaft goes around. This will give you the rearend ratio.

      Re: 62 rear end

Roger: If you have a correct Positraction rear axle, the carrier should contain a large 'P" character cast in it. This stamping is on the top right hand side of the carrier if you are looking at it with your back to the front of the car facing the rear end. Also, a Positraction rear axle should have a vent pipe attached to the top of the axle housing. Non Positraction axles use a breather cap. Terry's counting method should provide you with the axel ratio.

          rear axle ratio tag location

          John,

I have a question. I noticed that the rear axle ratio tag is at the 1-o'clock position. In the JM, pg 86, it mentions at approximately the 2-o'clock position.

My question: Since the JM says "approximately", is it correct to have the tag at either position for a 62?

          Thanks,

          Tony

Tony, thanks for bringing to my attention. I checked my other car and it is one bolt down. I will get the other one back to 2 o'clock.

A true positraction rear will also have a big P cast on the driver side of the center case, as below.

And the filler plug will have a round tag which instructs using positraction fluid.

The NON-posi axle housing will have this style of a vent instead of the long vent tube.

I'm pretty sure on an open rear end you have to rotate the wheel 2 revolutions and count the driveshaft rotations so if the driveshaft rotated slightly more than 3 times you should have a 3.08.
                3 1/2 times would be a 3.55. etc.

The number would end in 812 if it is a true posi, but over the years lots of people have put posi units in open rear ends. The other number (date code) would depend on when your car was built. Can you post a picture of the rear end?

Terry, thanks, I will crawl under and see if I can make out the numbers.
All I can see is the P.
                        62 build date is 03/16

If your rear is a posi, and it has a 62 build date, then the casting number DOES end in 812! That was the ONLY posi case made in 62.
