    66 pulley questions

I'm bought a 66 a couple of weeks ago and I am trying to figure out what I have as far a pulleys. I know they are not correct as bubba had to jury rig with washers and spacers to get the alternator to sort of line up, but it is still not lined up.

What I would really like is a copy of an article from the Spring 2009 Restorer. I joined NCRS in the Fall of 2009, so I didn't get the Spring 2009 Restorer. I also bought the CD after I joined, but the one I have only goes up to 2008, so I sort of miss out on that issue. I understand that the article I mentioned has everything you need to know about pulleys.

My car is a L79 with no power steering or no A/C.

I have included a couple of pictures, not very good, but I think clearly I have an aftermarket water pump and at least an incorrect pulley on the water pump.

The first picture shows the water pump pulley and a little of the crank pulley. If you look closely in the second picture there is a stack of washers on the lower alternator bracket to push it out to line it up with the pulley.

I believe the correct water pump for my car is 3859326. I'm not trying to get a correct one right now if the one I have will work with correct pulleys.

I've researched the archives and so far here is what I found:

Correct water pump pulley is double row 3770245 and
My crank pulley is a double row, but must also be incorrect and I'm not sure what to order. There is on listed on LIC that says it for plain L79. Both Corvette Central and Paragon also list crank pulley's but the one I think they say is for the plain L79 doesn't look like the one from LIC.

Can someone verify the correct water pump #, and #'s for the water pump and crank pulleys?

Also, is there anyway to get my hands on the Restorer article from 2009 without spending another $50 to get an updated CD set? I have not order a 66 TIM&JG yet as I was not planning to have the car judged.

    Thanks,
    Don

      Thanks,

Now I'm trying to figure out the correct belts.

The captured belt number I found is 9433722

Looking at the corvette parts vendor websites is confusing. The AIM list 3847710, however, when I look that GM number up at Paragon, it says that belt is for 66 350hp with air. Paragon lists their part number 1571 as equal to GM 3861946 and the correct one for 65-67 w/350hp, w/o AIR.

Can anyone verify the correct belt numbers? I'll also check the archive now.

        Re: 66 pulley questions

Well, maybe I found the answers in the Archive for the correct belt numbers

Looks like the GM #9433722 was a later replacement and the correct part number for the captured belt was 3837810.

And I believe the correct alternator belt for the 66 L79 no air and not power steering is GM #3861946.

          Don,
Call Quanta or go to their web site and order their belts as I think they are the manufacturers that supply the Corvette parts houses. Fifteen years ago when i got in to the hobby I bought bets from Chicago Corvette and it was the wrong belt (Somehow the parts numbers were mixed up in their inventory) well after the second time they sent me the wrong belt I saw a Quanta label on the belt packaging and called them and they took the wrong belt and sent me the correct captured belt. I have always had positive dealings with them.

According to my 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (effective Oct. 1965) the fan belt listed in Gr. 1.062 for a 1966 Corvette w/SHP 327 (exc. A.C., P.S.) is GM# 3837810 (3/8" - 34 11/32"), IW (Idler, Water Pump & Fan) in crankshaft groove #2. I believe this is a mistake as the 1966 w/SHP did not use an idler pulley.

            GM # 3837810 was replaced with GM # 9433722 (7/16" - 34 3/8") in Sept. 1974.

My 1967 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Apr. 1967) lists GM # 3861946 (3/8" -54") as the belt for the 66 Corvette w/SHP (327), GW (Generator, Water Pump & Fan) in crankshaft groove #2.

According to Chevrolet Parts History GM # 3882816 was replaced by GM # 3861946 in March 1966. I can not find GM # 3882816 in any of my vintage Chevrolet parts catalogs.

The alternator pulley for your application is GM #3871242.

                  Don,

I would recommend going ahead and getting the JG even if you're not planning to have the car judged. It has a wealth of information about how the car came from the factory, including pictures and text with part numbers.

I probably will. I have one for my 1960 restoration project. As I have more time an money to correct things on the 66 I will definitely need one.

                    Thanks,
