    Richard,
The system requires 6 ounces of mineral oil. I usually put 5 ounces in the compressor and 1 ounce in the filter drier. After adding oil to the compressor, turn the compressor by hand at least 10 to 15 full rotations. This will distribute the oil. If you have the compressor mounted in the car you can remove the vbelt and again turn it with a spanner wrench. Also check to see if the compressor was shipped with oil in it and what type. If so remove oil and add the new charge if the oil in it is compatible with mineral oil and R12 refrigerant.
    I hope this helps you.

I haven't looked up a '79, but the Chassis Service Manual for the earlier year C3 cars gives a blow by blow listing of how much refigerant oil is in each A/C system component for just this reason... How much do you put in when you replace a given system component with a fresh/dry one?
