    Fire Extingishers

Just read section 2 item#25 in the 7th edition judging standards. Don't have the 8th edition yet.
#25 B says:" An appropriate size and type fire extinguisher, large enough to reasonable expect the capability of extinguishing an engine fire."
My question: Do judges check to see if the FE is fully charged? I realize this is a dumb question but since I don't judge that much I don't know.

Yes I have the latest and most expensive FE's available because I need them to appease nice insurance guy who comes around and checks my place once a year. And they better have the latest tags.

But to my disappointment this past week I took a 1963 GM fire extinguisher along with several others in my shop to have them certified, refilled, etc.
The FE company would NOT touch my 63 FE. Said they are not allowed to refill anything older than 1984.
So does that mean I cannot get credit for my 63 dated FE in my 63 Coupe at a show? (gauge shows the FE is discharged)
One would assume the answer would be a flat no as not charged and therefore a paper weight. But I notice this is not spelled out and was just wondering. Thanks, John D

P.S. Do all states have that 1984 ruling???

    JD,

Most City/County/State governments adhere to the National Fire Protection Association codes. The NFPA code specifies rules for Car Events inside a Convention Center, Fire Extinguishers, etc.

First, you won't get more credit for a dated (63) fire extinguisher than you would a new 2011 fire extinguisher.

Secondly, what good would a discharged 63 fire extinguisher be if you needed it???

      Duh!!!!

          Re: Fire Extingishers

Judging rules are written the way they are to damp the possibility of an owner realizing he forgot the fire extinguisher extra credit and 'borrows' a full sized one from the host hotel's hallway. That won't necessarily be appropriate for handling an engine compartment fire nor will the hotel folks be 'happy' with NCRS folks!

No, not every extinguisher has a discharge status meter on it, but a factory original over-the-counter dealer unit is certainly NOT going to be fully functional IF it's needed for actual use. So, set aside the original service unit and get a decent extinguisher that can see actual usage if necessary. Remember, we don't judge owner/dealer insprired options...

Those rules are also written to discourage the use of small hand-held "extinguishers" about the size of a cocktail shaker. Those will barely extinguish a cigarette and are not appropriate for an engine fire.

Thanks for good replies although not actually what old JD asked.
See paragraph 2. I have working fire extinguishers. Ones that are inspected regularly. That's not the issue.

So I will repeat: Do judges look to see if the fire extinguisher is functional?
It's a curiosity thing. I was in a fire in Sept 63 and have been more aware of fire prevention and safety than most people. I also was a commercial builder and my shadow was the Fire Marshall. Whew!!!
