I recently put on 215/70R-15 radials, changing from 205's after several years of use. Within two weeks while turning into a driveway I took out about 1" of the underside lip of my fender when the tire and fender met. I never seemed to have this problem with the 205's. I searched the archives looking for what the ride height should be or what others have. I found a post from John Hinckley stating GM never publuished ride height deminsions. Mine is measuring at all corners in the 24 1/2" to 24 3/4" range. Seems low. I guess I need first to take the measurements shown in the AIM. My question; I'm from a construction background so I have no special measuring instruments other than steel tape measures. Is there a particuliar measuring instrument I should look for or use to take the "J", "Z", "K", "D" measurements. I notice in the AIM that measurements are down to the .78" / .15 ". Any help appreciated. Thank You

Re: C-2 Ride Height & Measurements
Don,
I think a tape measure to a level floor will get you close enough. I think most figures are +- 1/2" so if the floor is fairly level there should be no problem.
Other people have posted about fender problems with the 215 radial, check the archives.- Top

Re: C-2 Ride Height & Measurements
Hello Don;
The Chevrolet service manuals have "trim heights" measured at the front and rear rocker moulding area.
Hope this helps solve your tire rub problem.

Re: C-2 Ride Height & Measurements
Thank You Tim & Ray. I want to get as close as possible. I just did not think a steel tape measure was a good tool. I was thinking of maybe making something out of wood or metal ( two pcs. slotted ) that extended back and forth with a wing nut to tighten. Then I could measure more percise after removing.
I'll have to look in the archives regarding the 215's. When I needed new tires it seemed that everyone was recommnding the 215's and the revs per mile and dimensions were very close to the old bias.
Well I'll see what measurements I come up with, then I can see how it measures up to factory. Might need new front springs. I know rear leaf spring bushings are only a year or two old.
I'll go from here. Thanks again.- Top

Re: C-2 Ride Height & Measurements
It seems that some cars can use 215's and some can't. I suppose there is some difference in body location on the frame from one car to the next.
The body can be positioned further forward or rearward (or even left or right) and also slightly higher off the frame due to shim count at the core support.- Top

Re: C-2 Ride Height & Measurements
Follow measurement guidelines in the AIM. You are looking for a differential measurement between sprung and unsprung locations of the suspension.
215's are wider than 775's and this is just enough interference if you hit a driveway bump with the wheels turned hard to one side. You can continue to run 215's if you remember to ease over those bumps in the future.
This is a common problem with C2's with aftermarket tire sizes.- Top
