Re: Advice on Engine Hoist
I have a USA Arcan with a 5' boom that will work from the front, along with a tilter, I can pull a SBC & Th400 or a 4 spd as one. I found it at a swap meet 12 years ago for $250, got the USA tilter for $25. Not sure what they could cost now but a lot more I suspect. In the shop I have a 2 ton over head electric on trollies.
The rental hoist used to be good but I haven't used one in many years so I don't know what they have now. I also built a a frame like Tom did 30 years ago to just pull a 350 out of my 69. It wasn't nearly as strong as Tom's just a few double 2x4's and a 4x4 overhead. I wouldn't trust it with a BB or tranny attached.
Tom - nice to see you work on those old warbirds. Those a ways before my time but I appreciate them neverless. Brad Hood, a member here, is also an expert restorer on the fighters. We had a pretty nice collection up here 30 years ago at Bradley airport until, a then rare, Tornado came through and ripped up all the planes outside.
