    Tail light gasket

I have a 58 and I am putting my tail light housings together. I have a large gasket from CC that is described as a "tail light lens gasket-outer". From photos I have seen, I don't see a gasket between the large outer lens and the chromed housing. I also don't see a gasket between the chromed housing and the body. Was this gasket used originally? If so, where did it go?
    Thanks,
    Jim

NCRS Tech Info Manual & Judging Guide, page 41, ". . .tail lights lens . . . and sealed with a dark gray gasket under the outside lens edge. No reference to a body to tail light housing gasket. Check the 1958 A.I.M.

Thanks Joe. I didn't see any refernce to the gasket in the A.I.M> I'll take a second look.

62s have a lens to housing and housing to body gasket.

My P&A Cat, 12-71, shows in
Gr 2.590 GASKET, Parking Lamp Lens for 53-62 pn 5933026 (1 3/8" ID) and
Gr 2.684 GASKET, Tail Lamp 58-67 pn 5948748 inner (3 3/16" OD) stop, direction and back up lamp
It would appear two gaskets are used, but I know nothing about C1's
What caught my attention was a reference to dark gray color of outer gasket - think you need to verify that color with an original car, please.

The only color of repro gasket for lens to housing that I could find was black. It can't be seen once it is installed.

Concur on color. I just finished installing my black gasket and the color can not be seen.

Thanks Bill. Nice details of the back end of the socket too...I'm trying to find sockets for my housing currently.

                    Re: Tail light gasket

I just replaced the entire housing that fits inside the chrome bezel on my '61 from one out of a mid-year. They are exactly the same except the newer one is stamped '63'. I don't know what yours looks like, but I'm guessing they are similar. The originals fit on 3 'studs' in the bezel and are rounded over rivit fashion. I just ground them off and pop rivited the new one in place. Once back together you can't see it. You should have no problem finding a used mid-year tail light.

Hi James, I know this is an old post but I have the same question you had about the CC outer black gasket. I believe it goes between the lens and the tail light assembly to keep it moisture proof. I just can't figure out how to keep the gasket in place when trying to screw the lens on.

Was thinking about trying to use rubber cement or gasket adhesive to keep it from moving. How did you get you outer gasket installed? Any tips?

James Rice 49716 is no longer an active member of the club.. Don't look for a reply from him.. your idea about a dab of gasket adhesive sounds logical.. good luck,
