    Z-06 brakes

Does anyone offer a suitable street brake shoe for 63 Z-06 / 64 J-56? I don't want to run the original metallic shoes on my 64 J-56 car for street driving. Need something that fits the arc of the J-56 finned drums.

    Thanks,
    Rex

    Rex,

I know of no replacement shoe of the correct size to fit the Z06/j56 drum. There may be a solution though.

I've never tried this but I think a set of shoes for the standard 63-64 Corvette/pass car can be ground, slightly to correctly fit the arc of the slightly larger radii of the HD drums. The grinding would remove material from the center portion of the lining but I don't think it would be excessive.

Z06/J56 brake shoes are exactly the same as standard shoes other than the thickness of the pucks on the Z06 shoes. That thickness makes up the difference in the drum diameter difference. The web portion is exactly the same.
You can also switch the entire system over to standard return springs and adjusters.

One more possibility would be to also replace the drums with standard 11" drums from pass car or Corvette. That way, new standard shoes would not require grinding to fit the larger ID Z06 drums.

Keep the Z06/J56 drums and shoes in order so they can eventually be reinstalled in the same location.

Have you checked with the folks at "Praise Dyno Brake, Co." out of Texas? I got my J-65 replacement package from them with their "Metrix Ceramic" shoes. Perhaps they have a package for the Z06/J-56 or can make one up for you.

      Their website reads: www.praisedynobrake.com

Last phone numbers I had were 972-636-2722 or 877-606-7867

After getting past an experiment with new 11" replacement drums from Ecklers that wouldn't fit, I recut my existing drums. It still took awhile to run them in (400+ miles), but the've been working fine ever since providing near equal performance w/o brake fade, yet with significantly less pedal pressure. I probably could benefit from a resized master, but it took me too long to locate a correctly dated 63 original piece so I've settled on a compromise for my street only driving.

          Rex,

If you have a hydraulic shop press, you can just re-arch the shoes to fit your drum's radius. To reduce radius, stand the shoe on it's end and press the other end downward. If you need a larger radius, lay the shoe down with the arch up like a rainbow and press on the middle.

Shoes have preformed bend relief joggles already in place and it only takes a very small amount of tweeking to get a perfect match with the drum. Practice with your old worn out shoes if you want to get the hang of it first.

            Rex,

Try Carquest. Part numbers BS 248 bonded or BS 248 R Rivetted.

            They are 11 5/32 dia by 2 3/4 wide.

I think this is the size you need!!
