    C1 Door Weatherstrips

HAVE AN EARLY 59 WITH DOOR POST THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN DRILLED FOT THE WEATHERSTRIP CLIPS. THERE ARE THREE HOLES ON EACH DOOR BELOW THE POST AND ABOVE THE AUXILLARY WEATHERSTRIP THAT APPEAR TO BE SCREW HOLES. THE 59 SHOWS TO HAVE THESE ON THE POST. ANY IDEAS? THESE ARE THE CORRECT MOLDINGS ON THE POST.

    Re: C1 Door Weatherstrips

Your repro weatherstrips are your only option at this time. According to 1958-1960 Technical Info Manual & Judging Guide, "All door posts had serrated front edge with 1959 and 1960 using philips screws and metal retainers in addition to glue on posts." It could be possible that if your car was a very early 1959, the door posts might not be drilled for the philips screws, but I do not know that with any certainty. I don't know if the only difference between 1958 and 1959 door posts are the added holes to secure the weatherstrip.

My early 1960 has the same 3 holes below the door post and above the auxillary w/s. I asked a Tech Discussion question on the holes and was told by one person that they were rain water drain holes; maybe to catch overflow from the drip rails. When I installed my main w/s, I tried to pull it over the holes to cover them, but then the w/s was at the wrong angle to go vertical, cover the door post bolt hole and up the door post.

This Is A Nov 58 Car. Do You Know About The Holes In The Door. Looks Like This Should Have Retainers But Cannot Find Any Documention.

That Is Exactly Right. Would Be Just Right Distance For The Forked Clips With Screws.

Here's my 1960 original upper area, for added detail.

The Holes Don Is Referring To Are Horizontal Along The Weatherstrip And Not Along The Post. This Car Never Was Drilled For The Post Retainers.

Don, My 59 is a Nov 58 build. The posts are different. My 59 has 58 door posts and when I ordered new weatherstrip it didn't fit. The first difference is the top of the post where the widow stop is moulded into the rubber and there is a cut out for this on a 59 post to accommodate it piece. I'm assuming that this was left over from the 58 production run. Not being the original owner or knowing anyo f the previous owners, it may have been changed sometime during its life

My '59 is an early Nov '58 build and I have owned it since 1969. The left door, post and weatherstrip are original. There are no holes along the horizontal strip but there are push through retainers to hold it in place. They are hard to see in the photo. The post is not drilled but the top of the post is closed in to make the window stop.

The right door is a '60 put on early in it's life before I got the car as part of a collision repair. The weatherstrip and post are still original to it also. There are no holes along the horizontal strip but I can see holes under the strip if I lift it up for the retainers. The post is drilled and the top of the post is open with the window stop being in the rubber of the weatherstrip.

Your post appears to be not drilled but with an open top. Could it be a replacement? Could the holes be from someone doing a replacement of the weatherstrip at one time and drilling holes too far out? I don't know.

Thanks For Your Pics! Looks Like The Original Weatherstrip Is A Lot Wider Than The Replacement. I Saw Another Pic Of A 57 That Had Original Rubber And It Was Wide Like Yours. The Push Pins Went Through The Weatherstrip And Into The Holes. Looks Like What I Have Is As Good As It Gets Unless There Are Nos Weatherstrips Somewhere On The Planet.

                      Re: C1 Door Weatherstrips

I bought weather stripping from GM back in 1971 when I was first contemplating a restoration of my car. After reading this I'm curious of what it looks like. It's cataloged and boxed. I may just dig it out today since it's raining and I can't work outside like I planned.

I'm pretty sure I bought door strips as bubba had painted them with the doors before I got the car.

The original weatherstrip for my Dec. '58-built '59 has metal clips (built into the weatherstrip) that go into those 3 holes.

Thanks For The Pic! This Is What I Understood To Be The Correct Molding From Representative Of Corvette Rubber. They Did Not Reproduce This Rubber With The Clips As Original. Cost Effective For One Year Run.
