John Hinckley, picture of midyear engine shipping bolt on 6-C1, posted in 2007?

    John,

I found a post of yours in the archives from Sept. 3rd, 2007 (C2 fuel pump changeout, Post #10), discussing the shipping bolt on the front of the engine block. The post is too old to reply to, and the picture you posted is no longer there. Here is the post:

See photo below - the topmost of the two tapped bosses on the front of the block, just around the corner from the fuel pump, should have a 3/8"-16 x 1/2" shipping bolt in it; that hole goes through, into the fuel pump pushrod hole. Remove it and use a longer substitute 3/8"-16 bolt, finger tight, to hold the pushrod in place while you change the fuel pump. After installing the pump, remove the substitute bolt and install the 1/2"-long shipping bolt, with thread sealer on it. Don't turn the engine over with the substitute bolt installed.

    2. Pushrod position doesn't really matter, although it's easier to R&R the pump with the pushrod all the way "up" (on the base circle of the eccentric on the camshaft that drives it). The pushrod stroke is about 3/8"; you can "bump" the engine with the starter until the pushrod is all the way "up".

    3. A film of RTV is "insurance".

    4. The lever on the fuel pump must be outboard of the end of the pushrod as-installed; the end of the pushrod actuates the lever.
I'm trying to determine whether the bolt I have is either the correct type or possibly original. The bolt that was in this location on my '67 small block is 3/8-16 x 3/4", reg hex, Grade 5 with a "C" headmark.

If you still have the picture referenced in the old post above, would you please re-post it? Among other things, I'm hoping it would show headmark and grade details, if present. Did this bolt change to 3/4" in length by 1967, or is that a sure sign that I have the wrong bolt?

    Thanks very much,

    Scott

My 62 had a 3/8-16 x 1" with 9/16 hex head with a M with three dash marks around it. I used a 1 1/2" lenghth bolt to hold the pushrod up when taking the fuel pump out.

Thanks for the post John, since it seems the length was not consistent from year to year, sounds like it's possible I might have the correct original bolt. The one I have is also 9/16" across-the-flats with three dash marks.

        Scott------

I'm VERY confident that what you have is the original bolt.

Thanks Joe. After finding the Thread referenced in my first post, I went to look for it last night. It was still in the engine block. Nice to look for something where it's supposed to be, and actually find it there
