    66 Hood Emblem

My 66 came with an aftermarket L-88 type hood which I don't care for. I also got what the PO thought was an original hood, but now I believe it was a 65 hood as there are no holes on the inside of the hood where you could attached the Corvette hood emblem.

There are signs that the hood was drilled for the emblem on the outside (see picture 1), but these have been filled and seem to be much to large, i.e. about 1/4".

I have found good info in the archives on how to locate for, and the size of the holes for the inside of the hood to fasten the speed nuts.

Picture two show a wood template that I made and it fits the emblem very well. I drilled 5/32" holes in it and these are snug on the emblem posts.

What I need to know is what is the hole size for the outer side of the hood? Should they be snug, e.g. 5/32" are with a little play?

    Thanks,

    Don

The holes are so large that a blind person could put the nuts in with his hands. You won't believe how big they are. Better find somebody with a 66 and measure.

Joe, I think you misunderstood my question. I know the size of the holes on the under side of the hood are large (about 1"). I'm looking for the size of the holes on the outer side of the hood. Thee would be hidden with the emblem installEd, so I was hoping to fined someone with them emblem off.

I'm probably over thinking this. Likely will just drill holes that will provide a snug fit of the emblem

I wouldn't drill the holes for snug fit but rather for a loose fit but not sloppy loose.Measure the diameter of the emblem studs and then drill 1 to 2 drill sizes over. Start out with a smaller size in case you get them slightly off then you can elongate them in the direction you need to go without getting them oversize. Then drill them with the final size bit.

          Donald ,

I checked my 66 hood by dropping in drill bits until they would not fit , and I would say that the size is a loose 5/32. Most holes were that size , while a few holes handled the 11/64 bit, but just barely ! So I assume that the hole size is 5/32 and a few were just drilled a little more agressively .

5/32" is what I used to make the wood template so I'll use that on the hood. I really want to get rid of the cheap aftermarket L-88 replica hood as soon as I can. But I also need to get the 65 hood painted.

            Thanks,
