    Painting Knobs

    Hi All,

    I posted some time ago about how best to paint the knobs on my '66 the semi-gloss black that goes inside (a prior owner removed the black). Is there a primer that needs to be used? How best to get the paint to adhere?

    First attempt resulted in . . . . failure

    It definately should have primer first. If you notice the paint doesn't cover all the way out to the outside diameter. There is a fine line around the OD of the black paint and inside of the raised edge of the knob that is left unpainted. I used a thin cylinder shaped piece about a half inch tall and slipped it inside the knob recess to prevent the paint from completely covering the depression. If you do this you will need to mist prime and paint so that the paint doesn't seep under the cylinder shaped piece.

      Hello;
      Have had success painting dash knobs by cleaning thoroughly. The final step with GM window cleaner.
      Using a small artist brush dipped in Rustoleum # 7777 spray (sprayed into the cap) or similar consistently mixed paint.
      Twirl the knob in your fingertips or insert onto a shaft that is turnable on a fixture.
      With enough paint on the brush to wet the desired area let it flow up to the indented line on the knob. It may take more than one brush full to get the entire area wet with paint at the same time.
      If you go beyond the area you wish to paint, wait until the paint flashes, but is not totally dry and wipe or scrape the area you don't want painted. I use my fingernail to remove any unwanted paint.
      Takes a little practice, but soon you can start a dash knob painting company.

        Rob, Use a Self Ecthing primer if the knobs are chrome. This will help the paint to adhere.

          Rob,
          I used semigloss black contact vinyl that is used for truck lettering. Just punch out the correct diameter with a hole punch, peel off the backing and put in the knob. Works great and no concern about chipping.
