1970 Drivers side instrument panel removal.

Trying to remove the drivers side instrument panel to replace the headlight switch and speaker.

Do I need to drop the steering column to make enough room?

    TIA,
    Mike

I found it easiest to remove the column entirely to get the instrument panel out. You will also have to reach up in tight quarters to unhook the speedo and tach cable.

There are all the light bulbs, vacuum lines to disconnect too.

If you are going to all this trouble now is the time to completely restore the gauges and replace all the bulbs.

My choice would be to remove the pillar post mouldings and the top dash pad. Headlamp switch and speakers are easily accessed then. Chip.

        Hi Mike,
With which ever method you choose be very careful with the pads. At this point they've become quite dried and brittle. You can crack the pad or the vinyl covering with too much pressure.
Also, note the position of the 2 vacuum hoses on the headlight switch as you take things apart. The blue striped hose goes on the front nipple. The 71 AIM shows it on the rear nipple.
        Good Luck!
        Regards,
        Alan
