    7818568 69-82 Flange & Cplg Assembly

1969-82 Corvette Flange & Coupling Assembly #7818568 that is now available through GM dealers has recently been changed and is really not the same part that was used in production.

The new part has a coupling disc with only four laminations of cotton cloth and neoprene rubber. The original part was much stiffer because it had 7 laminations of cloth and rubber. You would have a more direct feel of the road with the stiffer disc.

The new part does not have a screen molded into the face of the disc. Therefore, it will not conduct horn grounding current through the flange and coupling assembly in order to close the horn relay and blow the horn. (Parts before the screen ground disc had a brass strap or a wire running through the middle of the flange and coupling assembly to provide an electrical ground path.)

I contacted an engineer at Saginaw and asked him how do we go about complaining about a part that has the correct part number but no longer performs its function like the original. This is his reply.

Per your Voice mail, I contacted a manager at GMSPO and explained the situation.

He informed me that the correct procedure is to go to a GM Dealer - Parts Department - and they will generate a Case#. This is then forwarded to the "Partech Group". Issues like this is what Partech specifically Manage.

The only problem is that when GMSPO gets complaints about replacement part problems, especially parts for very old applications, the answer usually is to discontinue the part and be done with it.
