The JG says that some cars have been observed with a large piece ( 2'X3') of foil covered yellow insulation. Some have been seen with a smaller piece. It says that they were held with 7 or 8 clips. Did all 69's have this insulation? Would there be evidence of the attachment of the clips? Were the clips riveted like the tunnel insulation clips? I looked at a original owner 69 today and it had the insulation but it is alot earlier than mine. Thanks for any help.

I have a July 69 350 MT. There was no tabs for the insulation under the foot wells but there was insulation above the trans. I installed new insulation above the trans and none under the foot wells and received no deductions.

I had that insulation on my car. I am looking for a vendor now. You can see the clips.Attached Files- Top

Re: 69 underbody insulation
Brad, here's a photo of my Dec '68 build. As you can see the insulation goes up the firewall. The original insulation was falling apart but I was able to save it using some foil HVAC tape from Home Depot.

Re: 69 underbody insulation
Brad,
The foot well foil insulation was added through a Tech Services Bulletin during the '68 model year as a dealer installed fix for heated passenger compartment complaints. It was carried over into production of early '69s. My October '68 built car has the clips and insulation. If your car had the insulation you are sure to find some remnants of the clips. The '68 retrofit was pop riveted on whereas if I remember correctly, the '69 was regular aluminum rivets. The foil and clips are available in reproduction (Paragon, etc.) Installation takes some doing and even some modification to get a good fit. At least that was my experience with an A/C car.

Re: 69 underbody insulation
My October 4, 1968 build has the foil insulation over the trans and up the footwells. The plastic shields do not last with my L-68, they always melt or deform. I seem to have high exhaust temperatures. I have gone to the metal ones that that are correct for later builds and install the plastic for judging only. Also note that foam insulators were used over the transmission bellhousing, over the frame rails under the body, and with triangular piece over the frame where the foot wells kick up on each side. My car did not have any foam when I restored it, it may have been OEM later in the production year.- Top
