Re: Day/Night Rearview Mirror Glass from ????
I have to disagree with what is stated in the Noland Adams book on the day/night mirror being standard for the 1966 model year. I have files on WAY too many unrestored 66's from decades ago that had properly dated standard mirrors.
I think Joe Lucia posted a scan of a 1966 dealer order sheet a few years ago and if I remember correctly, there was no mention of an optional inside rear view mirror. I think I saved it and if I can find it, I'll post it.Bill Lacy

Re: Day/Night Rearview Mirror Glass from ????
Guys: Appreciate the dialogue on this topic but as to my main question and concern.
Where does one find the proper beleveled 2" X 8" D/N glass that fits the housing. The normal corvette suppliers only offer the 10" and do not grind glass for a 2 X 8. I may have to find a re-silver business .
Bill, you indicated at 67-72 repo will fit, are they 2" X 8" tapered glass ??
As for originality, I e-mailed my originally owner last night, who bought the car new from the dealer and factory ordered it on April 7th, 1966. He informs me he never changed the mirror from new and had the car from 66 to 2004 when I bought it. It is a D/N chrome Guide mirror - non date glass with grey surround trim and grey knob. Maybe Luby Chevrolet changed it when it arrived at the dealer but the original owner indicates -not. I'm the second owner and trust me the original owner when sold to me at 39,900 miles did little to no maintenance in 38 yrs with 99% of the factory parts on the car. No deducts on my TF at the last NW Regional due to this apparent optional dealer installed mirror. I'm tracking down 66 photos now from the original owner when it landed at the dealer..........- Top

Re: Day/Night Rearview Mirror Glass from ????
Keith,
Does your mirror look like the one in the 3 photos below?
This mirror was removed from a 1968 Camaro (code on one of the glass panels was "VZ" or Dec. 1967) back in the 1980's. This mirror is in good condition except for the stains in the mirror glass.

Any of the REPO 8" day/night mirrors will work, I suspect that they all come from the same supplier. 67 Camaros use the same mirror and you may be able to find it cheaper from one of their vendors. You can also use the pretty new gray rubber that comes on the REPO mirror.Bill Lacy

Re: Day/Night Rearview Mirror Glass from ????
Even though I do not believe the day/night interior mirror was ever installed on the 1966 Corvette assembly line it seems that this mirror was available "over the counter" during the 1966 production year.
My 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (effective October 1965) lists the following:
66 CORVETTE.........MIRROR UNIT, inside, non-glare prismatic.............986600
There are also 3 other mirrors of this type used on other Chevrolet models: 985601, 985657, and 986599 (see photo).
Does anyone have a NOS 986600 mirror in their collection so that we can see exactly what it looks like?
I believe that my two 63 Corvair and 65 Skylark day/night mirrors (posted on 06/14/2011 @ 12:27 AM) are GM # 985657 as shown in my 1964 Corvair-Chevy II-Chevelle Parts Catalog (Oct. 63).
My 1968 Corvair-Chevy II-Chevelle-Camaro Parts Catalog (effective July 1968) does NOT list a day/night mirror for the 1968 Camaro (w/gray surround) mirror (posted 06/14/2011 @ 6:07 PM). I will do more research on this mirror.

Re: Day/Night Rearview Mirror Glass from ????
UPDATE:
It appears that I have to eat my words. I originally believed that the interior mirrors with the "gray surround" first appeared in the 1967 model year. I now believe the interior mirrors with this "gray surround" made their debut in the 1966 model year.
I just found a 10" interior day/night mirror stamped "GUIDE GLARE PROOF" and "MADE IN USA" with the "gray surround" that I removed from a 1966 Chevelle Malibu back in the 1980"s. The mirror was attached to a support with a "4440430" casting number which according to my 1966, 1968, and 1970 parts catalogs in Gr. 10.187 is for a 66 MALIBU, CHEVELLE S.S. (exc. CONV.) models. The 1967 and newer Chevelles did NOT use the 4440430 support. Based on my 1966 parts catalog GM # 986599 is listed as the inside, non-glare the prismatic mirror for only the 1966 Chevelle.
I now believe that the 986600 inside, non-glare prismatic mirror (8" long) that is listed for the 1966 Corvette has the "gray surround", in other words, I believe that Keith's 8" interior day/night mirror with the "gray surround" was made during the 1966 production year and is GM part # 986600 BUT I still have my doubts that it was actually installed on the assembly line. I tend to believe that it was installed at the dealership when the car was sold.
I can't help Keith find a new mirror glass but I am glad he started this thread as it definitely opened up my eyes.

Re: Day/Night Rearview Mirror Glass from ????
I don't know if they were standard or an option but in the 1966 Corvette Dealer Brochure, under extra cost optionsit lists "Inside prismatic-type day night non-glare mirror"
When I used to go bone yarding. I took a lot of 8" day night mirrors, with out the gray rubber, out of many 65 66 small GM cars.Bill Lacy

I am sure that some day in the near future we will find out if the 1966 8" prismatic-type day/night non-glare mirror (GM # 996600) either has or does not have the "gray surround". My thinking is that the 996600 mirror does have the "gray surround" as all my 1963-1965 8" day/night mirrors (GM 985657) did NOT. I would say this is why the part numbers were different. It is also possible the "early" 1966 Chevrolet-Chevelle-Chevy II-Corvair models were issued the non-gray surround mirrors to use up the stock on the assembly line.
BTW, I also just found a 10" day/night mirror stamped "GUIDE GLARE-PROOF" and "MADE IN USA" from a 1966 Pontiac Sta. Wagon (manufacturing date unknown) that does NOT have the "gray surround". The adjusting knob is chromed unlike and of my other day/night interior mirrors.
Let the research continue.

Keith,
Have you called LIC? If I'm not mistaken they offer new glass for your mirror, or a service to install new glass in your mirror. Section 10 item #12C. Might give them a call.
Good luckRob
