    1967 original glass

Need some advice. I have been performing a frame off restoration to my 67 #276. The glass is original with date codes and are as follows: front UA, rear LA. It unfortunatly has some wiper smear and minor scratchs in both the front and rear i.e. ice scapper etc. You can't feel them with your nail but I've tried using Groit's glass polish and polishing pads, it looks better, but they are still visible and will not compare to the rest of the car upon final assembly.
Should I install as is and take deduction for condition and by the way what is the deduction for this condition ?
Other alternative is to replace with correct date coded glass and get a deduction for the replacement glass.
My understanding is that know one makes the glass with the proper tint line. Who would be the best source for this purchase?
Trying to evauate my options, points deduction on condition vs points on replacement part?
Thanks in advance for the input!

mike I'm in the same boat as you, I've called every glass shop in Jacksonville and no one can help. I'm going to clean it the best I can and reuse. I rather have my original glass which is tinted. Not much help but I'm sure we are not the only two in this boat.

Hi Mike: I faced this same dilema several months ago and found a local glass polishing service that compltely removed all the surface scratches from my windsheild. I tried several commercial polishes myself and never got close to the results the professional acheived . The guy that did mine specialized in removing grafiti from buildings, you might try that type of search locally. The process took several hours and controlling heat build up was his pirority . If you do a search for windsheild polishing success I posted several pictures showing the process. Good luck, keep your original if you can.

I have a good size stone chip right on the drivers side, but with 22,000 miles, I just have to leave it alone.

          Re: 1967 original glass

          Hi Michael:

When I bought my 67 it had extensive wiper scratches in the original windshield. They were not deep enough to catch a fingernail, which is the often-cited test to determine whether a scratch is too deep to polish out.

I purchased the Eastwood glass polishing kit that consists of a special fiber pad that mounts in an angle grinder, plus a jar of polishing compound. After reading the instructions I found that the recommended speed for the angle grinder is slower than the fixed-speed grinders, so I bought a variable-speed grinder (which cost much more than the Eastwood kit).

The good news is that I was able to polish out 100% of the scratches. The bad news is that it took me an entire day to do it. Progress is very slow and you have to be ultra-careful to avoid local heat build-up, or you can crack the glass.

If you are patient and persistant, I recommend using this method. If you are not patient and persistant, take the car to a glass shop that offers this type of polishing service.

The key thing to know is that if the scratch is not deep enough to catch a fingernail, it *can* be polished out.

            Mike
My 2 cents would be to reuse your original glass...I would much rather have my original glass with original logo's and original dates than a reproduced one without any scratches...In fact, some judges may give you a "pass" on a scratch or two respecting the fact that it's the original...or maybe a dot at worst where if the same judge saw a repro glass with a NTP logo, then you're going to get a point or 2 deduct...Just my two cents...Having original glass in a car is a real bragging right....Good luck with your car....nice early car too....ARA

The stone chip can be repaired nicely by one of those guys you see under tents in parking lots repairing windshield chips before they become cracks.

Leave the original glass in. Depending on how bad the scratch or chip is, you'll probably only get a 1-3 point loss for condition.

A reproduction windshield with the wrong tint band was regularly getting a 10 point deduct in Regional judging on my car.
