69 Th400 Question For Joe Lucia

    Joe,
I appreciate your help previously and I had two more questions.

Is the VIN stamped someplace on the case of the TH400 or is it on the plate riveted to the transmission?

Is there any external difference between the 69 and later units up to say 73 if they were base engine models?

    Thanks again,
    Brad

My recollection is that the VIN derivative is stamped on the transmission case but I don't recall it being on the data plate. I've forgotten just where it's stamped on the THM-400. Somebody else here should know, though.

Other than the data plate, I don't think there was any external difference between 68-73 THM-400's. As a matter of fact, I think the passenger car THM-400's of the period were the same, too.

The VIN derivative is on the drivers side between one of the webs just above the oil pan matting surface.

I'm not sure Joe but didn't the passenger cars still have those ears/tabs on each side of the the bellhousing where as the Corvette housings had them cut off to fit under the tunnel?

I'm not aware of that difference but it's possible it exists. In any event, the SERVICE part number for the case was the same for all applications.

The VIN derivative location should be illustrated on the first page of the M40 section in the Assembly Manual; it is in the '69 Camaro AIM with M40.
