C1 Repairing a Broken Leaf Spring?

If a broken leaf spring is welded back together, is it repaired? Or will the welded leaf really be repaired? I removed the leaf springs from my 1960 a year ago and saved them. Never plan to have them re-arched; thought I would save them for the next owner. Now I am wondering if they are really scrap iron? i would like to hear various thoughts on this.

Broken leafs are scrap iron, no more.

I got a clear answer from Dick, scrap. I am sure I could get the two pieces welded back together, but I assume the leaf would not have the tensile strength it had as a whole and would probably snap again.

There is probably no way to purchase a single modern leaf that would fit with worn out leaves. Correct?

I would think the only viable option would be to purchase the same leaf from someone parting out similar leaf springs. Probably a lot of trouble for little return and I would still have a worn out set of leaf springs!

Let me try this again. I thought I had made this post. From the limited metallurgy knowledge, I do not think that you could achieve a successful repair of a piece of tempered carbon steel, that required the ability to flex such as a spring would have to have.

              Joe,

Like Dick said. In mild steel applications welds are usually stronger than the surrounding metal. In tempered applications that probably isn't the case. In any application, a welded spring will not perform as a continuous unbroken piece would. I can't tell you if it would fail, but the spring rate would be different, and would flex differently at the weld.

Adam, the broken leaf is the second one from the bottom.

I think I have it, I only have one approx 45" long gruved leaf in good condition, its been blasted & painted black. I also found two loose long ones too..........

Update, after realizing u are looking for second from bottom, that would be next shorter than the one I have, sorry, just missed it for U joe, Adam.

I need the leaf that is 31" long, 2" wide and notched on both ends for the bands. Thanks for checking anyway. Maybe another NCRS member will be able to help. I don't know what model years had the same size leafs.
