    C2 wiper motor

I'm having a problem with my wiper motor. I found lots of testing information in the archives, but didn't find anything with the same symptoms that mine has.

This is from a 66. I tested the motor in the car and it ran but would not park. I followed the test procedures in the archive by removing the wiring connectors from the motor and using test leads directly to the battery for +12v and ground. Testing in the car worked fine, i.e. ground to case, +12v to center terminal then grounded the yellow and blue (inner and outer terminals). Other than park it ran as it should, i.e. high and low and stopped when I removed the inner and outer terminal grounds.

I just removed the motor this AM and benchtested. The motor starts running on high speed as soon as I ground the case and hook up +12v to the center terminal, it didn't do this in the car. If I hook up the inner and outer connectors it does go to slow speed but does not stop running with I removed these two connections. It only stop if I remove the case ground or +12v. And does not park in any case.

Anyone got a suggestion for what to check next?

Also, any recommendations for someone to repair this. I had my C1 wiper motor restored by Corvette Specialties of MD, but since they moved West they have not been doing wiper motor work.

    Thanks,
    Don

Its a pretty common problem. It is usually caused by a dirty mechanism. Cleaning all the old grease and goop out will usually solve the problem. The other possibility is the mag switch. That switch is what the mechanism trips to stop the action.

Wayne, would the grease also explain why the motor starts running as soon as I ground the case and hook up the+12v? According to the test procedures I have found, it is supposed to start running after you ground the yellow or blue connector.

Hi Don, I had a similar problem with my car (65) and it ended up being a broken ground wire to the starter that grounds the wiper motor, mine would run and not shut off until I would turn the key off ,

I eliminated that possibility by grounding the case of the motor while in the car. I actually have it out of the car now and still have issues. Funny thing is I just tested it again and it worked fine

My wiper would act up on cold mornings until I got it to run a few times to warm up. Turned out to be the grease was too stiff on the mechanism so it was hanging up in various modes of operation. Cleaning and lighter lube fixed it fine.

Yeah, I've read on other threads that overly thick grease causes problems. I've been cleaning to try to get off some of the grease. I can get it to work, and it will park now but it cycles twice before it will park.

So now that it works somewhat some of the time, and I have it out of the car (not an all together easy process) I think I would like to have a professional look at it.

Back to my original question, anyone have a recommendation for someone who does wiper motor repair. Mine actually looks like it was either a later replacement or restored unit as it all the outside plating looks pretty fresh.

                Thanks,

                Don

Has any one used a wiper motor repair service called WiperWorks, in Sewanee, TN? I am rebuilding a 63, and mine doesn't work at all, and is in need of a complete overhaul.

If you search this forum you will find some references to Wiper Works. The one I saw gave them a very good rating.
