Has anyone used Permatex Hylomar on gaskets? I've heard it's pretty good stuff but no one in my area heard of it.

Re: Hylomar
From my very limited experience with it:
- it remains tacky forever, as claimed, so parts can be disassembled and reassembled many times
- it also remains a slow oozing liquid forever. if you disassemble parts and leave them disassembled, the Hylomar will creep
- it is claimed to be fuel resistant. maybe. ethanol enhanced fuel will clean it right off. can't say about fuel without ethanol.

Re: Hylomar
It's wonderful stuff. I used it first in my early days in the aviation field when assembling and testing gas turbines. I always thought it strange that a product made under license from Rolls Royce was used on a P&W engine but there you are.
It's since come in very handy on several cars and bikes where no other goop would quite seal the joint. Now I know why Rolls invented it.- Top

Re: Hylomar
Where do you guys find it? I can get it online but the only fuel resistent product I can find locally is #3 Aviation Permatex. I want to try it on new intake gaskets to test it with an oil leakage/burning problem.- Top

Re: Hylomar
They had to invent something to plug the leaks.

I work in the aircraft engine business (just up a few towns from you in CT) and this is used in many different engine models all the time in bearing compartments to help seal them. Like on threaded fasteners that screw into oil wetted areas. Good for large temperature extrremes. Doesn't totally harden. Doesn't put any bad stuff into the oil system. I have an old tube at home and use it for applications noted above when I run into them.- Top

Re: Hylomar
Thanks guys, seems like the consensus is it's a good product and may work out well for my testing on the intake.
I checked my local NAPA and they were clueless, of course they once told me that sold USA Spicer joints only to find they were imported off brand ones.
I'll order some online and see how it works out.
Thanks everyone.
Dan if you go to the Moroso show on 7/10 look me up in the swap meet area.

I would except I am in Daytona that weekend. Going down for the July 4th races and to spend some time at our condo on the ocean. I do need to get your services on a few things I want to get rebuilt on my '68. I will get in touch with you!
Thanks- Top

Re: Hylomar
Well I stopped at a few more parts stores, no one heard of this. Last stop was an old time small independent parts store- sure enough he had it on the shelf for $10. Sold! I noticed he sold Standard ignition parts too- something once common and now hard to locate on a local level. Nice to still see some parts stores around still, this was a Big A store.- Top

Re: Hylomar
Bought some at Advance Auto Parts last month. $9 bucks for small tube. First time I tried it.. worked great on thermostate gasket where intake surface was a bit rough, also hoses, vacumn fittings, fuel line fittings.
Its blue in color and some seeps out of fittings to form a nice blue seal around the base of the fitting. Not exactly stock appearance.. but can just remove it you want.- Top
